In the last two years, a tequila distribution industry has been building in the city of P ugerville. Two companies started their own brands and dis- tributorships in the city, and the owners of both said they have continued to grow their product sales and recognition. launched a brand called Verdadero Tequila, and in February 2020, Peter Trevino, Angel Gallegos and Sylvester Palacios started Dos Cuernos tequila. As other local distilleries and bars in P ugerville look at potentially creating tequila brands of their own, local experts say continued growth in this area could be great not only for P ugerville’s reputation but also its economy. “De nitely tequila [is] having a moment,” Barber said. “That trend is only growing. We don’t know when it will plateau, let’s put it that way, but the tra- jectory has been really strong.” CONTINUED ON 28

The city of Hutto will push back the start date on a project to repave a section of CR 137 in Hutto after expanding its scope to add several improvements to the intersection of CR 137 and FM 1660. Wade Benton, public works and engineering director, said nearby development has caused congestion that will need to be addressed before repaving the section of CR 137 between FM 1660 and CR 197. In a presentation at Hutto City Council’s Feb. 17 meeting, Benton recommended the addition of a right- turn lane from FM 1660 onto CR 137 as well as a left-turn lane from CR 137 onto FM 1660 and several upgrades to tra c signals and drainage. The project was originally projected to be complete this year, but a new tentative timeline shows design work beginning this spring and construction starting in fall 2023. “I know there’s going to be some

Round Rock o cials in February approved two amendments to the city’s planning and zoning code. Speci c facets of the amendments include:
Specialty gyms: • Specialty gyms and sporting facilities may be allowed in light industrial zoning districts. • These facilities must be fully enclosed within a building. Townhomes: • Townhome structures may have a total height of three stories, up from the previously allowed 2.5. • No more than 5% of the collective total of units may be represented by structures of two townhouse units. • Buildings with the taller three- story height adjacent to single- family or duplex lots must have setbacks a minimum 20 feet in length.

The amendments concern land zoned for light industrial use and townhome requirements. “We’re just bringing this code up to today’s standards,” Planning and Zoning Director Brad Wiseman said. Round Rock City Council approved economic development agreements with Fisher-Rosemount Systems and SDC Austin LLC. The approvals came during a Feb. 24 City Council meeting. The agreement with SDC Austin LLC, a company seeking to bring a data cen- ter to the city, will bring 20 primary jobs to Round Rock over the course of five years. It will also result in $185 million in real property improvements and $5 million in business personal prop- erty investments at its 1300 Louis Henna Blvd. office. According to the performance-based agreement, upon demolition, completion and occupation of its facilities, SDC will receive up to $1 million in two separate payments from the Round Rock Transportation and Economic Development Corp. The agreement for electrical equipment manufacturer Fish- er-Rosemount Systems requires a minimum $9 million investment in real property improvements and business personal property through upgrading an existing facility at 1100

Area leaders attend a groundbreaking for Fire Station No. 6.
The newest fire station in Pflugerville could be complete in about 12-16 months, but due to ongoing global supply chain issues, that timeline could stretch to as long as two years. That is according to Nicholas Perkins, chief of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2, who was one of several commu- nity leaders to speak at a Feb. 11 groundbreaking for what will be the district’s sixth fire station. The groundbreaking took place at 17221 Weiss Lane, Pflugerville. Perkins said once complete the new station will have three bays and house an aerial apparatus, or ladder truck, as well as a pickup truck that can provide more maneuverability for certain calls. Initial construction cost esti- mates for the new station were about $7.2 million, but Perkins said that has risen in recent weeks to about $7.4 million. PfISD donated the land for the new station, and Superintendent

Doug Killian said that was a move that simply made sense. Right now, response times for emergency calls in that area are about 12 minutes. Perkins said Fire Station No. 6 will bring that figure down to below eight minutes, and he added that rapid growth in the area means it cannot come soon enough. “In three years’ time, we’ve added a minute to response times throughout the district,” Perkins said. “That’s how important it is. We need to get these things up and running.”

With a working name of Weiss Lane Mixed Use, the prospective development is located west of Weiss between Wolf Pack Drive and Pleasanton Parkway. Pflugerville City Council approved urban corri- dor zoning for the development at a Feb. 8 meeting. A presentation from developer Land Strategies Inc. stated the west end of the development will feature an apartment complex, and the east side will be used for commercial

space. Land Strategies representative Paul Linehan said the site’s value has much to do with its proximity to the Lakeside Meadows development, Weiss High School and the nearby Amazon distribution center.

During a Feb. 17 board of trustees meeting, Willie Watson Jr., PfISD’s chief human resources o cer, recommended to district o cials that sta be com- pensated for winter weather- and COVID-19-related absences that resulted in campus closures Jan. 21, Jan. 24 and Feb. 3-4. Watson said the measure is necessary tomaintain morale, reduce turnover and ensure continuity of district sta . Since the board approved the compensation measure, administrators will now identify employees and absences covered by the resolution to provide the appropriate monetary compensation. Maggie Fulton, who works for PfISD and had tomiss work during the four days referenced, addressed the board and said it hurts hourly workers signi cantly when they are forced tomiss work. “If we didn’t get paid for those four days, it would
be a hardship for the hourly employees who are just trying tomake ends meet,” Fulton said. Mary Kennedy, speaking on behalf of another PfISD employee, also implored the board to compensate sta who had tomiss work. “The board ... must approve compensation for these four days,” Kennedy said. “Their very livelihood depends on it.” At the Feb. 17 meeting, Superintendent Doug Killian clari ed for the public that the compensation is intended for all district sta . City Council looks at increased trash fee

PFLUGERVILLE Residents may soon see a $0.96 increase in their monthly trash pickup fees. At a Feb. 22 meeting, Pflugerville City Council approved an ordinance changing the city’s trash collection fee from $16.55 per residence per month to $17.51, a 5.8% increase. The city’s contract with Waste Connections, the company that handles trash collection in Pfluger- ville, allows Waste Connections to request fee adjustments to account for changes in operating costs, such as from increased fuel prices. Waste Connection submitted a request for the $0.96 increase in December. The request indicates Waste Connections calculated the change based on a 6.8% increase in the consumer price index from November 2020 to November 2021 and an 11.4% increase in the cost
of diesel fuel from September 2020 to September 2021. Council will consider the item for final approval at a regular meeting March 8.
