Since 1980, Texas has seen 190 climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each, totaling over $400 billion, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data. “There are a growing number of studies looking at the impact of climate displacement, meaning numbers of people who can no longer live in their homes because of the impacts of climate change,” Travis County Commissioner Brigid Shea said. The state’s average number of billion-dollar disasters per year has increased in recent years, up from an average 4.2 annually between 1980- 2024 to 13.6 annually between 2020-2024. With a total of 20 events just last year, Texas leads the nation in the number of billion-dollar weather- related disasters, according to NOAA. “They’re going broke.
