REGIONAL PROJECTS Harris County approves $53M for trailway projects Harris County commissioners ap- proved $53 million May 10 for the Harris County Toll Road Authority’s new Tollways to Trailways initiative, which will add 236 miles of new recreational trails across each of the county’s four precincts. A portion of The Woodlands is in Precinct 3. The measure passed in a 3-2 vote, and dissenting commissioners Tom Ramsey and Jack Cagle cited con- cerns with safety and using toll road funds instead of parks department funds, respectively. According to the HCTRA’s planning documents, most of the trails will be placed adjacent to existing toll roads, providing access to existing parks, public transit hubs, schools and neighborhoods. Cost: $2.99 million Funding source: Montgomery County Precinct 3 3 Hwy. 242 overpass The project will construct a grade sepa- ration along Hwy. 242 from west to east of FM 1314. This is one of four projects to construct an overpass at Hwy. 242 and FM 1314. The project was 87% complete as of Texas Department of Transporta- tion’s May report. The projected comple- tion date is the second quarter of 2022. Timeline: July 2018-second quarter 2022 Cost: $24.35 million Funding sources: federal funds, TxDOT COMPLETED PROJECTS 4 Kuykendahl Road erosion A project to repair erosion on Kuykendahl Road on the southbound bridge lanes over Spring Creek took place in May, according to Precinct 3. Repairs included regrading the slope as well as adding more soil, along with use of hydromulch and erosion-control blankets. Timeline: May 2022 Cost: not available Funding source: Montgomery County Precinct 3
The project will create two 12-foot lanes in each direction as well as the two additional lanes for an 1,817-foot bridge over Spring Creek. Northbound Gosling will be restriped at the intersection with Creekside Forest for two lanes and a left- turn lane. Timeline: December 2021-early 2023 Cost: $8.2 million (Montgomery County Precinct 3 contributing $4 million) Funding sources: Montgomery County Precinct 3, Harris County Precinct 4 2 Birnham Woods Drive widening Portions of Birnham Woods Drive will be closed this summer to ensure that lanes are open before August to prevent disruptions in school traffic, according to Montgomery County Precinct 3. A project to widen Birnham Woods from two to four lanes from Waterbend Cove to Rayford Road began work in March with a 420-day contract, officials said. The completed project will result in two lanes in each direction in addition to a left-turn lane at Birnham Woods and Waterbend and at Birnham Woods and Lexington Boule- vard. The closures will take place between Lexington and Waterbend in June and from Lexington to Trophy Ridge in July. In the meantime, officials said contractors began work on pavement and subgrade widening, and concrete pouring began May 21. Timeline: March 2022-mid-2023
1 Gosling Road widening Work on a new bridge is underway over Spring Creek as part of a 14- to 15-month project to widen Gosling Road to four lanes between Creekside Forest Drive and Gatewood Reserve Lane. The project began as a joint effort between Mont- gomery County Precinct 3 and Harris County Precinct 4 because it includes areas within both counties. Due to Harris County boundary shifts, Gosling is now in Precinct 3, which will complete the project. According to Montgomery County Precinct 3, contractor NBG Constructors installed beams for a portion of the new bridge over Spring Creek in May and worked on the bridge approaches and abutment. In addition, concrete pavement for a new southbound lane was poured in May.
