is colon cancer prevention,” Dr. Sanjana Luther with Austin Gastroenterology said. “We’re really making sure that polyps, which are abnormal growths, are out of there before the cancer can even start.”
While the benchmark age was previously 50 for insurance-covered colorectal screenings, that age has since dropped to 45. As the rate of colorectal cancer diagnoses in younger people rises, specialists are turning to prevention as their rst line of defense. “While we call it colon cancer screening, it really

This spring, Travis County acquired almost 2,000 acres of land in the Hill Country and will purchase several smaller parcels along the Eastern Crescent this year after residents voted in November to raise their tax bills to protect green space. The new land will be added to the county’s 27 parks, which span over 11,000 acres. The acquisitions will protect environmentally sensitive land from being turned into dense development, and parks foundation ocials hope the new 70-mile trail system will increase accessibility to nature to a historically underserved area. “Time and time again, Austin voters, in either Travis County elections or city of Austin elections, have voted overwhelmingly to fund these kinds of acquisitions,” said Je Francell, director of land protection for The Nature Conservancy. “They want to put their money where their mouth is, and they support it.” TravCo increases parks, trails
The details
The family received oers to buy the ranch for over $130 million, but agreed to preserve it by selling it to the county for $90 million, marking the largest land value donation in Travis County history, ocials said. Travis County ocials plan on turning that 1,506-acre chunk into a new park named RGK after Ronya and George Kozmetsky. The park will be similar to Reimers Ranch, complete with hiking and biking trails, restrooms, and picnic areas. Travis County Commissioner Ann Howard said the acquisition happened just in time. “Development was eminent,” she said. “The families had many oers to buy the land from as far away as Dubai.”
The rst tract the county acquired spans 475 acres directly adjacent to Reimers Ranch Park. The land will become an extension of the park with trails, picnic areas and other amenities. The tract was appraised at $45 million and slated for a 950-home development, but the Topfer family that owns the land agreed to sell it to the county instead in late April for $5 million less, saving it from development, Travis County Parks Director Charles Bergh said. The second parcel, located just east of Reimers Ranch, spans 1,506 acres and was slated for 1,500 homes, Bergh said. The land was originally purchased in 1970 by Ronya and George Kozmetsky as a family ranch with rolling hills, canyons and vistas. The ranch was later inherited by their daughter, Nadya Scott.

County ocials will begin planning RGK’s trails and amenities over the next year while also oering guided tours of the land’s rolling hills and wildlife. Ocials hope the park will be open to the public by the end of 2025. In the coming years, the foundation may acquire the remaining land between Castletop and RGK Park, preserving more than 4,000 acres of combined space in the Hill Country.
Alongside parkland, Travis County ocials have been slowly acquiring land in the eastern metro area for a 70-mile trail system, which crews will break ground on within the next year and a half, starting near Onion Creek to McKinney Falls. County ocials do not have an estimate for when the entire trail system will be nished, as it will likely take more bond cycles of funding to complete.

Lakeway creates teen court diversion program The city of Lakeway established a teen court diversion program for juvenile offenders following new state legislation aimed at early intervention for at-risk youth. How it works Lakeway’s Teen Court Program will allow teens accused of certain Class C misdemeanors an alternative to the traditional court system where they are tried by a jury of their peers, according to city documents. Class C misdemeanor offenses include traffic tickets, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft, and possession or use of alcohol. The candidates were appointed to council by default after running unopposed. The background Cobb served on council from 2018-21 and formally resigned before his second term ended due to personal reasons, according to previous Community Impact reporting. He has now replaced former council member Andrew Rebber, who decided not to run for re-election. Both King and Hohl are serving their third consecutive terms on the dais. EISD to implement disciplinary code levels Changes to Eanes ISD’s student code of conduct are set to take effect during the upcoming school year, including new disciplinary procedures for misconduct. The board of trustees discussed the draft code June 4. The details According to agenda documents, three signifi- cant changes have been proposed for the 2024-25 code of conduct, including the implementation of a “levels” system and corresponding disciplinary action based on violation level. Camp Craft Road to fully close starting February Improvements along the low water crossing of Westlake’s Camp Craft Road will now require a full road closure from February 1 to June 26. The project, which will lift the existing road by 9 feet to prevent flash flooding from Eanes Creek, was delayed due to a mix of supply chain issues and timing concerns with the Eanes ISD school year, city staff said. The road closure will not affect the parking lot entrance of Eanes Elementary School, and detours will be set up as needed, City Administrator Trey Fletcher said. The details On June 12, council received staff updates on road projects within the voter-approved, $7.9 million improvements bond package from 2021. Project Manager Vicki Ortega said the Camp Craft Road project delay allows the city to prioritize

UT researchers use AI to create costly Alzheimer’s drug for less
From chat bots to art production, new uses for articial intelligence are blooming left and right. Now, University of Texas researchers have found a way to harness the power of AI to create an expensive Alzheimer’s medication for less. The goal The study, published in March, utilized an AI tool developed by UT post-doctoral researcher Danny Diaz to create the active ingredient in the common Alzheimer’s medication galantamine. Galantamine is typically manufactured using daodils. However, the extraction process is time-consuming and costly due to unpredictable crop yields and weather, Diaz said. Just one prescription of galantamine requires hundreds of daodils and costs around $70-$116, according to health care technology company Oracle Health. Instead of relying on daodils, Diaz said the goal of the study is to eventually use bacteria to produce the active ingredient. “The goal is to turn sugar, which is like food for the bacteria, into a pharmaceutical drug for Alzheimer’s,” said Diaz, who now leads the Deep Proteins group at the Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning. “Eventually, the hope is to
make the drug much more aordable.” How it works By genetically modifying bacteria, the researchers can essentially “program” the microbes to create the active ingredient in galan- tamine as a byproduct of its normal metabolic function. Diaz said the challenge has been creating the right instruction manual for the bacteria, which involves changing their protein structures. “There are almost innite combinations [of protein sequences] to try. ... So the AI can narrow that research space down and save time by signicantly lowering the risk of not nding something that works,” Diaz said. What’s next So far, Diaz said the team is about one-fourth of the way to completing the bacteria’s proper mutation, and he expects the study could wrap up within the next ve years. With 2024 being named UT’s “Year of AI,” the university has become involved in dozens of AI research projects and programs in recent years. Diaz said he believes AI research will have the largest impact in biotechnology and health care.
Other healthcare research from UT Austin has used AI to:
Enhance diagnostic CT Scans for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Predict and identify patients at risk for developing Type II diabetes
Assess mental health questionnaires for depression symptoms
Diagnose knee arthritis from medical images
SOURCE: UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTINCOMMUNITY IMPACT
“It’s really hard for humans to wrap their head around a lot of these
problems because they’re just so big and expensive to iterate. ... AI is going to be revolutionary in how we manufacture drugs.” DANNY DIAZ, UT POST DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
