Policing report shows fewer car crashes, more auto theft

The Montgomery County Sheri’s O ce pre- sented its annual community policing report to The Woodlands Township during the township’s Jan. 24 board of directors meeting, showing a decrease in many crime categories but an increase in vehicle theft and burglary since 2022. The background The Woodlands Township contracts with multi- ple agencies to provide law enforcement services in the community. The township is primarily serviced by Montgomery County Sheri’s O ce and the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s O ce. The annual policing report provided a snapshot of major trends in patrol and internet crimes for the township. Major trends included a decrease in auto accidents and an increase in internet crimes against children, according to the report. Crime categories which have increased since the report presented in December 2022 are motor vehicle burglary and auto theft, according to information from the township.

The details MCSO Capt. Tim Holi„eld said auto accidents around the township decreased 9% from 2022, with o cers responding to 1,117 total accidents in 2023. As for the number of calls to which MCSO and Harris County o cials responded, October saw an unusual spike in calls for service for that month, Holi„eld said. However, the fraud and information crime cate- gory is an ongoing concern despite a decrease from 406 to 330 reports in 2023, he said. He encouraged residents to be aware of potential phishing scams, which use emails, phone calls or texts to solicit personal information. Quote of note “We try to look at things that we call quality-of- life crimes ... which then goes to our strategic plan of reducing crime and the fear of crime. So if we can reduce quality-of-life crimes, you feel safer,” Holi„eld said.
