Lake Travis ISD sees uptick in dyslexia identi cation for 202223 LAKE TRAVIS ISD Identication of dyslexia students is on the rise in Lake Travis ISD according to an update to the district on Sept. 21. BY GRACE DICKENS IDENTIFYING DYSLEXIA students with special needs over the age of 18 to help them transition into the world. Alongside rising student population, the rate of students with dyslexia identied at Lake Travis ISD has more than doubled since 2014-15. The percentages listed below are relative to the rest of the student population at the time.
In addition to the L2 positions, there are also 12.25 vacant teaching positions and nine Level 1 paraprofessional positions, which oer in-class support or pull students out for resource classes. Lakeway Elementary School has the highest number of vacancies total with eight positions unlled, followed by Hudson Bend Middle School at seven vacancies and Lake Travis Elementary School at ve vacancies.
Representing 11.6% of the student population, or 1,318 students, special education students have varying levels of need and receive services in dierent ways. The number of special education students in LTISD has grown 9.6% annually since 2014-15, going from 646 students in 2014-15 to an estimated 1,332 by the end of October. The number of students identied with dyslexia has risen since 2014-15, from 2.8% in 2014-15 to 5.36% as of August. This is a positive change as edu- cators know a certain percentage of the population is likely to have dyslexia, but the challenge up to this point has been early identication and inter- vention, Board Member Lauren White said. The district was also provided with an update on the stang situation in special education and how parents are being kept in the loop. In terms of stang, the district is still short almost 50 positions in special education. There are 24 Level 2 paraprofessional positions available, representing the highest subsection of vacancies. These positions provide support for programs such as Life Skills and the 18+ program, available for
