HIGHLIGHTS MONTGOMERY ISD The Montgomery ISD board of trustees approved the design for Creekside Elementary at a meeting Jan. 17. In a news release following the meeting, details on the interior design were given. The design features a centrally located library with makerspaces. The interior nishes are inspired by the Sam Houston National Forest and the area surrounding the campus, and the forest-themed interior will focus on the school’s blue and gold color scheme. The one-story building will be equipped for 900 students. Creekside Elementary is set to open for the 2024-25 school year with construction bids being sent out in March, according to the district. prefer an earlier or later start for the school year and whether they wanted a fall or midwinter break. The school year will start Aug. 9 and end May 23. Thanksgiving break will be held from Nov. 20-24, and a preference emerged for a winter break beginning Dec. 18 and ending Jan. 2, Sauceda-Upshaw said. Nov. 7 and March 5 are scheduled for sta development days, and stu- dents will be o those days, she said. Sauceda-Upshaw said the district received 20,000 responses from the community before developing the nal version.

CONROE ISD The 2023-24 school calendar for Conroe ISD was unan- imously approved at its Jan. 17 meeting, including 174 total days of school for students starting Aug. 9. A district-level committee con- sidered several options as well as calendars from neighboring districts before deciding on a recommenda- tion for the calendar, said Hedith Sauceda-Upshaw, assistant superin- tendent for teaching and learning at the Jan. 17 meeting. LONE STAR COLLEGE Stephen Head, the chancellor of the Lone Star College System, announced he will retire Aug. 1 in a LSCS news release Jan. 10. Head started at LSCS in 1984, serving as president of three campuses and executive vice chan- cellor before becoming chancellor in 2014. He served as chancellor for eight years, according to the release. Head said in the release he hopes to give the LSCS board of trustees plenty of time to search and select his replacement by making his announcement early. “I am very proud of what we have accomplished and have watched the college evolve into one of the premier community colleges in the country,” he said in

LONE STAR COLLEGE The Lone Star College System experienced a 3% increase in enrollment this spring compared to spring 2022, the college system announced Feb. 2. According to a news release, enrollment climbed from 78,463 students to 80,595 students year over year. However, according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, spring enrollment in most Texas two-year public colleges fell 6% from 2021 to 2022. Nationally, enrollment dropped 7.8%. LSCS Chancellor Stephen Head said despite the decrease nationally, he is pleased to see LSCS’s enrollment increasing. “Whether a person is interested in academic transfer pro- grams or workforce training, Lone Star College is ready to help them be successful,” he said in the release. “We are also seeing more students choosing face-to-face instruction.” According to the release, last semester saw 42% of LSCS students participating in traditional, face-to-face classes compared to 34% in the spring 2022 semester. “Lone Star College faculty, sta and administrators remain committed to providing high-quality education, whether a student chooses in-person, online or a combi- nation of the two,” Head said.

a statement. “Serving eight years as chancellor at Lone Star College is without a doubt the most reward- ing job I have ever had.” LSCS board Chair Michael Stoma said Head’s legacy will be felt for generations to come. “I feel honored to work alongside him helping students, professors, sta and the community it serves,” he said in a statement. The LSCS board of trustees will begin conducting a search for its fth chancellor. According to the release, a search committee will be formed in addition to selecting a search consultant.

The LSCCyFair campus saw one of the largest increases in spring enrollment, data shows. According to an analyt- ics and institutional report on the LSCS website, spring enrollment jumped from 20,220 to 20,643 year over year for the campus. In the same time period, LSCKingwood saw 33 more students enroll. Enrollment decreased year over year at the other ve campuses—Montgomery, North Harris, University Park, Tomball and Houston North, data shows. However, the launch of LSCS’s eighth campus, LSCOnline, boosted spring enrollment with 4,291 students, the report shows.
