Out of the Darkness Walk draws crowds The Nov. 2 Out of the Darkness Walk organized by the American Federation for Suicide Prevention brought more than 2,000 people to Town Green Park for a 2-mile walk to show support for survivors of suicide loss. 1 The Out of the Darkness Walk, organized by the Southeast Texas chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, led walkers on a 2-mile stretch along The Woodlands Waterway. 3 A live music performance by Paisley Piggott and her father, David Piggott, highlighted the Out of the Darkness Walk along with several guest speakers. 4 U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, was among the speakers at the Out of the Darkness Walk. Other speakers included Judge Wayne Mack, Montgomery County Precinct 1 justice of the peace, who has advocated on behalf of suicide-awareness programs in south Montgomery County. 5 Supporters gathered at Town Green Park with messages of hope for survivors and individuals enduring suicide loss. Memorial Hermann holds 10 for Texas The annual Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas race held Oct. 12 included three events for a variety of ages and ability levels. 6 The annual Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas race was held at Northshore Park on Lake Woodlands Drive. 7 Runners in the Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas race completed a 10K race, a 5K race or a 1-mile fun run. Lone Star College announces small- business award winners The 33rd annual Small Business of the Year award luncheon was held Nov. 13 at the Lone Star Community Building in The Woodlands, recognizing small-business owners in the areas serviced by the college system. 8 About 300 attendees were present at the small-business award luncheon to recognize win- ners in categories such as family-owned, minori- ty-owned, woman-owned, veteran-owned, young entrepreneur and small-business owner. 9 From left: Mark Mitchell, president of the Lake Houston Area Economic Development Partnership, and Kelly Violette, executive director of the Tomball Economic Development Corp., were masters of ceremony at the Nov. 13 event. 2 About 2,520 walkers participated in the suicide prevention and awareness walk in The Woodlands this year.
