BUSINESS FEATURE Unchartered Adventures

“IT INVOLVES YOUR SENSES: YOUR SENSE OF TOUCH BREAKING STUFF, SEEING STUFF BREAK, HEARING STUFF BREAK. SO I THINK A LOT OF IT HAS TODO WITHA CATHARTIC

Partake in messy, cathartic and exhilarating experiences in Kyle O n the outside, Unchartered Adventures looks like any other warehouse; upon entrance, it is anything but. Those looking to wield a sledgehammer or throw an ax can don coveralls and protective eye gear to do so safely at Unchartered Adventures. Ten-year Army veteran and recently retired Austin-Travis County paramedic Damon Fogley started this venture, formerly known as 512 Rage Room, in early 2019 as part of his junk removal business. As an avid nder and seller of junk, Fogley realized he had the perfect duo on his hands. “[Rage rooms] just started opening up; there were just a few of them across the country. I was like, ‘Why don’t I open up a rage room? I’ve got all the junk right here,’” Fogley said. The business started out with rage rooms where people could break, throw and smash all sorts of “junk” that would have otherwise gone in a landll. As it grew in popularity, Fogley began expanding to add more experiences that include splatter paint rooms, ax throwing and a new escape room that will be unveiled soon. Once a week or so, the business holds a “junk car smash” on the lot behind the ware- house. An old car is brought in and participants bust taillights, windows and whatever else on the car. Wineries, bars and restaurants donate their empty bottles for the rage rooms; other items such as mirrors, plates, picture frames and more are sourced at thrift stores, garage sales and online. Whatever is left over that can be recycled is recycled. Fogley said he is actively trying to make the business more family-friendly and to not allude to the idea that those who come here need to be angry. “It involves your senses: your sense of touch—breaking stu, seeing stu break, hearing stu break. So I think a lot of it has to do with a cathartic [experience],” Fogley said. With a large portion of customers from other areas like San Antonio and Dallas, Fogley said he is in the process of franchising and opening more Unchartered Adventures locations. BY ZARA FLORES
