SANMARCOS &HAYS CISDS After the filing period closed for open school board seats Feb. 18, four candidates filed in San Marcos CISD, and five filed in Hays CISD for the May 7 elections; however, one withdrew from running in SMCISD. The District 4 spot had three can- didates for the seat being vacated by retiring Board Member Kathy Hansen, but one—John Leonard— withdrew his candidacy, according to school district documents. The two candidates for the spot are Brian Shanks and Gabrielle Moore. Two candidates in both districts are not on the ballot because they are running unopposed: Clementine Cantu for District 5 in SMCISD and Esmeralda Pérez-González for District 2 in HCISD.

HAYS CISD The board approved a resolution Feb. 28 outlining compen- sation to staff affected by inclement weather that hit Central Texas on Feb. 3, 4 and 24. All district employees who were unable to work because of the closure or winter weather “will be compen- sated for their regular duty schedule,” according to the resolution. Employees who had previously requested and were approved for paid or unpaid leave on those days or who were absent from work for a reason unrelated to the closures or weather will be charged an appropri- ate leave day “and/or have their pay docked in accordance with district policy,” according to the resolution. All monetary compensation will come from the district general operating budget.
