Priority projects identified in Pflugerville’s mobility plan include: Roadway projects: 13 Estimated cost: $186.2 million
Pflugerville City Council approved the first reading of a transportation mobility plan at its May 13 meeting. Council members requested reconsid- eration for bike lanes in the roadway designs. Some background Pflugerville created a mobility master plan in 2024, combining and updating past transportation and trails plans. The city’s main considerations include safety, connectivity, sustainability and diverse transportation options, according to city documents. The plan prioritizes: • Safer 4-lane divided major roads • Expanded collector roads to reduce congestion • Enhanced sidewalks and off-street bike lanes for safer travel • Expanded trail network from 1.9 to 3.7 miles
A project to prolong the quality of neighborhood streets in Hutto began May 30, causing road closures until the work concludes June 17. What residents need to know The project will improve streets in the Enclave at Brushy Creek Estates, Brushy Creek Meadows, Glenwood, Emory Farms and Country Estates II. About the project The pavement preservation project will help extend the life of asphalt streets. Con- tractor Holbrook Asphalt will apply a high density mineral bond, which will smooth roads and delay the need for a complete street replacement.

With mental health calls on the rise, Central Texas agencies are adapting quickly. A February 2021 fact sheet from the National Alliance on Mental Illness revealed that more than half of Texas adults with a mental health condition did not receive treatment in 2020. Health leaders said that although legislation has since improved access, significant gaps remain. Across the region, Crisis Intervention Teams and mental health units are being embedded in police departments. Counties are also expanding psychiatric services in jails to help bridge gaps. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office crisis team focuses on inmate mental health. Daniel Smith, director of inpatient mental health programs, said up to 40% of inmates receive psychiatric services, but post-release care is often complicated by funding and long wait times. TCSO also works with Integral Care’s Expanded Mobile Crisis Outreach Team to provide services and divert individuals from ERs and jails. Mental health gaps drive crisis team expansions
In Pflugerville
Mental Health and Incarceration in America 3.34M in Texas specifically have a mental health condition, according to the NAMI.
In Pflugerville, the police department has embedded 12 CIT officers across its patrol shifts. In March, the department launched a co-response program in partnership with Integral Care, the local mental health authority. The model pairs a CIT officer with a clinician from Integral Care, allowing them to ride together and respond to mental health calls as a team, according to Chief Jason O’Malley and Lt. Chet Vronka. The initiative aims to reduce unnecessary transports to jail or emergency rooms. The department was recently awarded a mental health grant, which will allow for additional staffing and resources. According to O’Malley and Vronka, the grant will fund a full-time clinician, designated bed space at Cross Creek Hospital, and triage training for dispatchers so they can better assess incoming mental health-related calls. In some cases, trained dispatchers may be able to direct individuals to resources without requiring a police response.

Six updates to health care services from area hospitals
1 Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital Jamie Youssef was named the new chief executive officer of Ascension Texas in May, according to a news release. Formerly the senior vice president of network development and services lines at HCA Healthcare, Youssef is expected to help Ascension Texas expand access to health care across Central Texas. He also previously served in senior executive roles for Medical City Healthcare - HCA North Texas Division and Medical City Children’s Hospital. Youssef will oversee growth and operations across Ascension Texas hospitals, several of which received “A” hospital safety grades from nonprofit organization The Leapfrog Group in May. Ascension Seton Williamson was among these, and around 78% of all Ascension facilities received an “A” or “B” grade this spring.
2 Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Round Rock
3 St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center A new wound care clinic opened at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center in March. The clinic is for those experiencing acute or chronic wounds. Conditions treated at the center include burns, diabetic ulcers, traumatic wounds, soft tissue necrosis, gangrene, crush injuries and many more. A team of specialists use hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment to promote vascular formation, encourage the body’s healing cells and inhibit bacterial growth, according to St. David’s Health Care. The hyperbaric chamber is pressurized with compressed air to a pressure two to three times higher than exposure at sea level. Typical treatment takes two hours and patients may receive daily treatment for 20-40 days.
The medical center recently added the city’s first laryngologist specializing in the treatment of voice, airway and swallowing disorders, according to the health system. Dr. Matthew Marget provides treatment for issues such as chronic hoarseness, swallowing difficulties and vocal strain. These types of disorders can significantly affect quality of life, but many older patients struggle to find care close to home. “Vocal issues are often tied to underlying health problems, but many people don’t realize it — or that they can do something about them,” said Marget. Additionally, the facility received an “A” hospital safety grade from nonprofit organization The Leapfrog Group this spring.

4 Dell Children’s Medical Center North The hospital elevated its trauma certification in April and now operates as an advanced trauma center, making it one of only three Level 3 pediatric trauma centers in Texas, according to a news release. To receive the status, Dell Children’s staff performed individual reviews of each patient case, received a two-day facility survey by Texas EMS Trauma and Acute Care Foundation, created trauma guidelines specific to the location and participated in a variety of other tasks. “As Central Texas continues to grow, it’s imperative that we invest in our hospitals and ensure we have the latest trauma advancements and staff available to serve our patients,” said Adam Messer, president of Dell Children’s Medical Center.
5 Heart Hospital of Austin at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center A cardiologist at Heart Hospital of Austin at St. David’s Round Rock became the first in Texas last year to perform a new procedure used to treat patients with blood clots in their lungs, according to a news release. The new thrombectomy catheter system is meant to treat pulmonary embolisms, or a sudden blockage in the pulmonary arteries. The catheter system is able to remove the clot by breaking it up and suctioning it out. This procedure is an alternative to medications like blood thinners to remove a clot. Dr. Joshua McKay, an interventional cardiologist at the hospital, performed the first procedure in a phased trial to gain clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
6 Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus is set to expand its offerings in 2025 with the addition of a craniofacial clinic. The clinic, which offers services at other Texas Children’s locations, treats children with facial, jaw and skull abnormalities. Conditions treated include undersized jaws; small or underdeveloped parts of the face; dentofacial deformities, such as Apert syndrome or Pfeiffer syndrome; acute chronic sequeale of facial fractures; and rare craniofacial clefts. Representatives for the hospital said the Austin clinic will include integrated dentistry and orthodontic services. The children’s hospital opened its Austin campus in February and offers a variety of pediatric and women’s services.
