Q&A: Local Chad Hardin shares advice for senior life transitions Former San Marcos real estate broker Chad Hardin shifted careers over the summer when he opened Caring Transitions of San Marcos & Kyle, a franchise that guides families through senior-re- lated life transitions, including downsizing, relocating, decluttering and more for residents in and around Hays County. Hardin spoke with Com- munity Impact about how families can recognize when it may be time to seek help, what red ags to watch for and how to plan ahead so seniors can stay independent longer.

What need did you see in the area that made you want to bring Caring Transitions here for seniors? I noticed a lack of tailored services that speci- cally help seniors downsize and transition smoothly to safer, more manageable living environments, with something that could ease both the emotional and logistical stress for families in our area. When a family tells you they can’t aord assisted living, how do you help them nd options that keep their loved one independent longer? I guide families through more aordable solu- tions like in-home care, nding local resources or even exploring creative nancing options, such as veterans’ benets or reverse mortgages. I also work hand in hand with local placement companies that will look at the nancial obligations and place them in an area that works best for them.

Can you share a local example of a senior or family you’ve helped stay out of a nursing home or delay that move? I recently helped a senior couple who were struggling with safety concerns in their home. Instead of moving them, we focused on making their current space safer through decluttering, organizing and adding necessary home modica- tions. With those adjustments, they were able to remain in the home they loved, stay independent and live more comfortably.
