Widespread drug shortages are on the rise across the U.S., experts say, leaving Conroe-area patients and medical professionals scram- bling to meet their needs. At the end of the rst quar- ter of 2023, there were 301 drug shortages nationwide, according to a report from the University of Utah Drug Information Service for the American Society of Hos- pital Pharmacists, a 23% increase from a year ago. The U.S. Food and Drug Admin- istration added Adderall to its list of medication shortages in the fall. Dr. Joshua Wollen, a clinical assistant professor at the Uni- versity of Houston’s pharmacy practice and translation research department, said the three most prominent medication short- ages are Adderall, Albuterol and Ozempic, which are typically pre- scribed to treat attention decit hyperactivity disorder, asthma and diabetes, respectively. “The FDA lists about 150 or so drugs currently that are on short- age,” Wollen said. “The majority of them are inpatient and are not used as widely as these three groups.” Wollen said the reasons for the shortages—including increases in demand and manufacturing prob- lems—depend on the medication. Taylor Mealey, a Conroe resi- dent and local pharmacist, said the shortages have worsened at her Conroe pharmacy since August. “My current manager has been in pharmacy for almost 30 years, and she’s said multiple times before that she’s never seen any- thing like this,” Mealey said.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS MONTH

FROM CHRISSY: This issue includes our annual Health Care Edition, which focuses on local health care trends. It seems that more and more local urgent care options are opening up in our communities, which makes things a little more convenient when the need to visit them happens. You can find these listed on Pages 18-19 along with the area hospitals. Wishing you a safe and healthy start to your summer! Chrissy Leggett, GENERAL MANAGER

FROM ANNA: Isn’t summertime so sweet? Be sure to check out our To-Do List on Page 9 for a few ideas to pass the time while school’s out, and then hop over and read the stories behind a few of our local businesses featured this month, including Sugar Sugar on Page 25 if you have a sweet tooth and Aladdin Kebab House on Page 27. Anna Lotz, SENIOR EDITOR

Meet Jason Culpepper

Houston Metro Publisher

What’s your typical day as a CI Publisher? JC: It begins with reading our email newsletters, then touching base with staffers covering our Houston communities. I also like to stay close to our customers and trends in the region. Attending chamber lunches or networking is something I prioritize, and keeping on top of the operational needs and financial health of our metro fills out my week. I strive to serve my team each day based on where their needs are.

How do you spend your free time? JC: I serve on several boards within the Cy-Fair community where I grew up and where I’m raising my family. Patronizing local businesses, specifically our advertising partners, is also fulfilling to me. Aside from Community Impact, what have you read recently? JC: I just finished “The Intentional Year,” “Smart Brevity,” “The Measure,” “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” and “Intimate Allies.”

Email newsletters are booming for CI; why should readers subscribe? JC: They really are the best way to stay informed with the news of the day plus entertaining items, like new restaurants opening and events to plan your weekend.

NEWS BRIEFS Lone Star College System increases homestead exemption by 7%

San Jacinto River Authority general manager resigns

HOW HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS WORK

A homestead exemption removes part of the value on a homeowner’s property from taxation and lowers the homeowner’s taxes. The following example shows how property taxes owed are calculated based on a home appraised at $300,000 with a homestead exemption of 8%.

The Lone Star College System board of trustees voted June 1 to approve a 7% increase in the home- stead exemption. According to a news release June 1, the move will result in homeowners paying less in taxes in the 2023 tax year. Two-minute impact: According to the news release, the new homestead exemption will be $5,000, or 8% of the assessed value of a home, whichever is greater. Homestead exemptions remove part of a home’s value from taxation, lowering the taxes owed. • The previous LSC tax exemption rate for an eligible homeowner was $5,000 or 1% of market value. • An average tax exemption in 2022 was $3,000 on a home valued at $300,000. • Under the new LSC homestead exemption, that homeowner would see a tax exemption of $24,000 for a $300,000 home. • Trustees also voted to continue an additional exemption of $75,000 for those on disability or over age 65.

and distribution in the San Jacinto basin as well as the operation of the Lake Conroe dam. Houston was originally appointed by the SJRA board of directors in 2007. Houston outlined his decision in an email to SJRA staff citing House Bill 1540 that—under an amendment that was sub- sequently removed by the Texas Senate— would have required the board to appoint a new general manager. The final bill was sent to the governor’s office May 30. Houston’s resignation comes despite the removal of the amendment calling for replacement of the general manager. He said in a statement his last day will be June 30.

• The new exemptions will automatically renew for successive one-year terms until a change is needed. Quote of note: “Lone Star College is committed to being good stewards to the community it serves,” LSC board Secretary Mike Sullivan said. “Lone Star College continues to remain financially sound and will be able to continue to pay down its debt, saving even more money for the tax payers.”

MONTGOMERY ISD During a May 16 Montgomery ISD school board meeting, Kris Lynn, assistant superintendent of finance and operations, said the guaranteed maximum price to build Creekside Elementary School and Phase 2 of Lake Creek High School is $1.3 mil- lion under the projected amount. The price for the new Creekside Elementary School will be about $33.5 million, and the price for Phase 2, which increases capacity to 2,500 students at Lake Creek High School, is $18.4 million. Lynn said the savings from these bond projects will go into a fund to enhance, modify, improve or provide additions they could not do otherwise. Both projects are expected to be complete for the start of the 2024- 25 school year, according to a May 16 news release.

CONTINUED GROWTH Enrollment at several Conroe ISD schools is expected to continue to exceed capacity in 2023-24. in the district that are already over the threshold, McCord said. For example, Conroe High School, which was at 99% capacity as of May 1, will be at 114% capacity in August.

CONROE ISD The number of schools overcapacity in Conroe ISD will likely increase when school begins in August, Assistant Superin- tendent of Operations Chris McCord told trustees at a May 16 meeting. Current situation: In March, the CISD Bond Planning Committee began meeting to consider needs ahead of the possible bond refer- endum that could head to voters in November. According to previous Community Impact coverage, 67 schools in the district are operating on average at 102% of their capac- ities with projections indicating it could grow from 71,000 students to 100,000 students or more by 2033. McCord said enrollment in the dis- trict is projected to reach over 73,000 in 2023. The influx in students will cause concern at certain campuses

nance and assistant city admin- istrator, said projections show the hotel’s operating revenue is around $2.9 million and operating expenses are around $4.5 million in the rst year. “That $5 million ‘oh by the way’ is just kind of unconscionable to me,” Council Member Harry Hardman said. “So I still don’t understand how we got here today and why this was not given its due diligence more so than three days before the damn thing was open.”

CONROE City Council approved an additional $5.1 million cash infusion that’s needed to sustain operations of the Hyatt Regency Conroe and Convention Center during a special meeting May 22. Raymond Gareld Jr., chair of Gareld Public/Private, said during the meeting an additional $5.1 mil- lion was needed to open the hotel and carry it through 2024 as there was a lack of working capital.
