said those anticipated to be the most affected by the change would be students in families that make $50,000-$60,000 annually. “When the cost of education goes up, the amount of [federal] Pell Grants also goes up,” Head said. “We will set aside money for the students that need help.” Head added there were previous plans to increase tuition, but those were put on hold due to the coronavi- rus pandemic. The tuition rates were approved March 8 for the fall semester.

Magnolia ISD trustees approve new incentives, stipends to recruit, retain employees

BY MAEGAN KIRBY

To recruit and hire educators in hard-to-fill areas, the early-signing incentive program offers $2,000- $6,000 to special education professionals, Texas certified bilingual teachers and Texas certified sec- ondary core subject teachers, according to Meyers. In addition, the transportation recruitment program approved Feb. 10 offers a hiring stipend of up to $1,000 for newly hired bus drivers and $1,000 to employees who refer a bus driver who is hired. The board also approved an early-resignation

incentive program, which offers a one-time $500 payment to employees who submit their resignation by 4 p.m. March 31, according to Meyers. There is also a teacher referral incentive program to offer employees $500-$1,500 for recommending a hired teacher, she said. “If we know teachers are leaving; if we can get them to submit their resignations earlier, then that gives us an opportunity to be ahead of the hiring season,” Meyers said.

MAGNOLIA ISD Trustees approved four employee recruitment and retention programs Feb. 10 to recruit staff following a competitive employment market during the pandemic, said Joe Dives, execu- tive director of support services for Magnolia ISD. “We’re growing,” Executive Director of Communi- cations Denise Meyers said. “We know we’re going to need more teachers; we know we’re going to need more bus drivers.”
