CITY HIGHLIGHTS CONROE Conroe City Council discussed applying for two grants at its Feb. 9 workshop meeting. The first grant is $100,000 for a Crime Victim Assistance Program, which would include funding for a crime victim liason’s salary and equipment, such as a computer. A second grant for $300,000 for the Body Worn Camera Program will provide computer storage for videos from the body cameras. Council did not take action on the items. Sheriff’s office reports ‘no racial bias’ in traffic enforcement

MONTGOMERY COUNTY The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reported there is “no indication of racial bias” in traffic enforcement in its annual racial profiling report for the third straight year. The report is required annually by Senate Bill 1849 and was approved at the Feb. 8 Commissioners Court meeting. However, the report shows 11.7% of stops were conducted on Black drivers despite Black people making up 5.9% of the county’s population.

Additionally, officers made 49,358 traffic stops in 2021, up from 37,147 stops in 2020, but a decrease from 55,155 stops in 2019.

“Based on our report we believe our deputies are fair, impartial and are focused on improving the safety of our roadways,” Lt. Scott Spencer said.

5 projects pegged for funds

council’s vote does not require the city to spend its federal dollars on the five projects outlined. The five projects prioritized range from $2.19 million to $4.99 million, according to the presentation, and involve water or sewer rehabilitation. The city of Conroe received $15.84 million from the ARPA, which is being paid out in two parts with the first $7.92 million received in June 2021 and the second half anticipated to be received in June this year, according to city information.

CONROE City Council members approved a resolution during meetings Jan. 12-13 that identifies five eligible proj- ects to receive funds from the federal American Rescue Plan Act.
