Officials share next steps to address STAAR performance Georgetown ISD is addressing student per- formance on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness administered to third- through eighth-graders this past spring. Next steps Wes Vanicek, GISD’s chief strategist for assessment and feedback, said the district will take the following steps to support classroom learning: • Combine STAAR data with other assess- ments to determine where students need intervention • Adjust curriculum for academic rigor • Continue teaching to new testing formats • Focus on literacy instruction

District staff said in a Sept. 18 update that the district is looking at other schools with marshal programs to shape its own this school year. The move will satisfy the requirements of House Bill 3, a new law requiring armed security officers on each public and charter school campus in the state. The law went into effect Sept. 1. In their own words Heather Stoner, GISD’s director of operations and school safety, said her staff is working to cre- ate its job postings for school marshals by observ- ing what has and has not worked at other schools. Police Department, which the district contracts with for school resource officers. “They’re our partners in all things law enforce- ment, and we are not going to leave them out of these important decisions,” Stoner said.
