DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS ROUND ROCK ISD The district reported as of Sept. 12 it still had 255 openings, including 118 teacher vacancies. The greatest number of openings are in campus support staff at elementary schools with 98 vacancies, according to district documents. ROUND ROCK ISD The district announced Sept. 22 that the Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Foundation, a nonprofit created by local leaders, has awarded $130,000 in grants to fund 62 projects and initiatives districtwide for the 2022- 23 school year. Superintendent contract extension, incentive passed

District gives update on its security plans BY BROOKE SJOBERG ROUND ROCK ISD With the start of the 2022-23 school year, the district announced several changes and improvements to its safety and security planning at the Sept. 15 board of trustees meeting. These changes included new employees, a safety audit and an anonymous reporting tool. Safety measures Round Rock ISD made several changes in its safety and security planning for the 2022-23 school year: • hired four district police department staff members; • completed a third-party safety audit; • created an anonymous reporting tool through Navigate 360; • received training for a new emergency mass-notification system; • informed staff of emergency and threat processes; and • applied for state grants for active shooter response training and equipment. ROUND ROCK ISD The board of trustees approved a one-year contract extension and a one-time incentive payment for its superinten- dent, Hafedh Azaiez, on Sept. 20. The one-time incentive payment of $28,900 was approved by a 5-2 vote. The “no” votes came from Places 2 and 7 trustees Mary Bone and Danielle Weston. Trustees also approved an extension of Azaiez’s contract through June 30, 2025, in a 4-2-1 vote, with “no” votes coming from Bone and Weston and Place 4 Trustee Cory Vessa abstaining. Weston said she voted no because the superintendent’s license was currently under review by the Texas Education Association at the time of the vote. The TEA closed the review Sept. 25 but did not report findings. Bone echoed the sentiment of the

pending review and also referenced some of the accusations levied against the superintendent in late 2021 and early 2022. The board placed him on administrative leave in January and voted to reinstate him in March. Vessa said she was not comfortable voting on Azaiez’s contract until after the election. Had the board waited, she said she would have voted yes because she thinks he is doing a great job.
