Problem: As the population grows in western Travis County, RM 620 will continue to see worsening trac congestion and safety concerns. Owner: TxDOT

Solution: A project proposed by TxDOT to widen the four-lane roadway to six lanes was delayed indenitely in 2020 as funding was pulled to focus on widening I-35.

Solution: Signals at several intersections will be replaced with underpasses at multiple locations along Loop 360 in a project from the Texas Department of Transportation aimed at increasing safety and mobility. The rst part of the project began in June on the intersections at Westlake Drive and Cedar Street.

Problem: During peak travel hours, the narrow roadway backs up considerably, aecting mobility and safety. Owner: TxDOT

Solution: TxDOT will add a continuous center turn lane, dedicated turn lanes, new travel lanes in each direction and more between RM 12 and Hwy. 71.

trac on the road. Additionally, the city will com- plete studies on Serene Hills Drive to address concerns about speeding and trac build up at the Serene Hills and Flint Rock intersection, Molis said. “We’ve done some trac studies on [Flint Rock] to look at the volume and capacity of the road. Our engineer tells us that, as of now, the road does have the capacity,” Molis said. “But as part of our long-term thoroughfare plan, we do show that road being wid- ened to a four-lane road.” LTISD is also anticipating comple- tion of its Vail Divide extension in early 2023, which will allow residents to access Hamilton Pool Road through a road near Bee Cave Middle School

both county and city jurisdiction, such as Flint Rock, Molis said. For Bee Cave, working with TxDOT on signal optimization at key inter- sections has alleviated a signicant amount of trac by making the lights turn quicker, Jones said. Addi- tionally, the city is working to gain full control of its trac signals, he said. “If we have more autonomy over the lights, we can see where trac is becoming congested at certain times and adjust those lights ourselves to get trac owing more easily,” Jones said.

instead of waiting at the light at the intersection on Hwy. 71, according to the district. Upon completion, TxDOT will hand the project over to Travis County for continued maintenance. However, the problem extends beyond the realm of far western Travis County. A TxDOT project to improve safety and mobility on Loop 360 recently began. TxDOT plans to improve nine intersections that collectively will provide congestion relief along the road. The next planned step of the proj- ect is set to begin in 2026 and includes work at the intersection at RM 2222, including a new diverging diamond interchange. Work began at West- lake Drive and Cedar Street in June

to remove trac signals on the Loop 360 mainlanes and add an underpass at both locations. Developing solutions Although coordination between so many entities for safety improve- ments may be dicult, it is possible, as shown by Lakeway and Bee Cave’s approach toward handling school trac, Jones and Molis said. In Lakeway, the city has worked to build close connections with its area engineer for TxDOT to work on roads such as RM 620 by building additional turn lanes and managing trac light timing. Similarly, the city is building relationships at the county level to address problems with roads having
