Casa Costa Bake Shop Bakery celebrates family heritage through familiar foods, recipes K atie Fujita started her bake shop in her home garage after both her mother and best friend pushed her to go to culinary school. “We had expanded to the point that we were turning away as many orders as we were able to take,” said Donna Costa, Fujita’s mother and the bakery’s operations manager. “So it was time to do something dierent.” Family runs deep at the family-owned bak- ery. Costa manages custom orders, and Fujita’s husband, Marcio Fujita, is the chef and catering director. The bakery’s menu combines Brazilian, Portuguese, Southern and even Scottish family recipes, such as grandmothers’ recipes for sausage and gravy and Scottish shortbread. “We never say, ‘We are a Brazilian bakery’ or, ‘We are a Portuguese bakery,’” Fujita said. “We are a family bakery that is inspired by our heritage inu- ence, and we try to bring that to everybody else.” The bake shopmoved into a 1930s home in Old Town Leander, which Fujita said was once the “creepy” old house that children dared not enter. Fujita and her family renovated the home them- selves—discovering old home quirks like door keys, good-luck horseshoes, shiplapped walls andmemo- ries of family pets. Families still stop by the home to see what their former family home looks like today. Casa Costa originally opened in August 2017 as Sweeten Up Bake Shop. But the name needed to show its family values, and it became Casa Costa Bake Shop soon after. Costa is Fujita’s family name, and “casa” means home, which is what Fujita wants her bakery to feel like. The bake shop has grown to include a pop-up bakery at Mercedes-Benz of Georgetown, and baking classes could be added in the future, Fujita said. BY TAYLOR GIRTMAN
