Navigating nursing needs Workforce shortages prompt partnership
BY ANGELA BONILLA
A statewide shortage in nursing faculty has prompted local health care and higher education o cials in The Woodlands area to take action with a program to bring nurses into teaching roles. The Shared Nurse Academic Practice Partnership Initiative, a collaboration between Sam Houston State University and four local hospital systems, aims to address the issue. In addition, Conroe ISD is working with health care professionals to help guide high school students who want to pursue nursing or related careers. “There is a nursing faculty shortage in the United States. ... In Texas in particular, it’s acute,” said Devon Berry, director of the SHSU School of Nursing. “That nurs- ing faculty shortage is really important, because down the pipeline from there is the nursing workforce shortage.”
Sam Houston State University students work in a simulation lab at St. Luke’s Health-The Woodlands to practice on a dummy.

Our Federal Government has a spending problem, and as we watch that continuously play out in real time it’s important to remember that the best way to achieve financial freedom on an individual basis is to avoid having a spending problem. Simply put, don’t spend more than you make. Having helped people save and invest for 40 years, it is clear that folks who are able to control their spending have the best chance of attaining financial freedom. Investments can grow your money but are no match for debt. Inordinate amounts of consumer debt will overwhelm investments and almost guarantee failure for those seeking financial success. Stop overspending, save, and invest. Financial freedom will follow. TOWNSHIP Talk FROM THE BOARDROOM The Woodlands Township Board of Directors held a Strategic Planning Workshop in May. During the two-day session, the Board took an in-depth look at their vision for the future and the priorities that will shape the 2026 budget and future planning for the community. The Board then established key areas of focus for the coming years: Public Safety – Continuing to invest in fire and law enforcement services to meet the needs of a growing and active community. Economic Development – Supporting a resilient local economy and fostering a business-friendly environment. Transportation – Improving mobility and planning for future growth. Tourism – Enhancing The Woodlands’ appeal as a regional destination for business, sports and leisure. Resident Engagement – Expanding communication efforts to educate residents about complex topics and decision-making processes. Quality of Life Services – Maintaining excellence in parks, recreation and environmental stewardship. As an outcome of the discussions, several ad hoc committees will be established to further explore and develop initiatives aligned with these priorities, including the Ad Hoc Public Safety Committee, the Ad Hoc Transportation Committee and the Ad Hoc South Gosling Tract and Public Golf Committee. “The Strategic Planning Workshop was a valuable opportunity for the Board to reflect on our community’s strengths and set intentional goals for the future,” said Chairman Brad Bailey. “We encourage residents to watch the workshop videos and stay informed as we continue to move forward with transparency and purpose.” To watch the recorded workshop and learn more about the Township’s strategic direction, please visit thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/meetingvideos.

Montgomery County requests safety barriers along Hwy. 242 flyovers
Next steps
On May 6, Keough conrmed TxDOT had received the request and state ocials are looking into options to fund the project by the end of 2025. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the rate of suicide per 100,000 people has risen from 13.5% to 18.2% in adults age 18-44 from 2013-22. According to the same data, the number of Texas residents who experience ve or more bad mental health days in a month has also risen from 23.3% to 29.3% from 2020-23. “This is not just a statistic; it is a crisis aecting our schools, our friends, our families and our community,” Tinnell said. “As a community, we have spent too much time grieving and remembering the names of those we have lost. But now, we must move past words and into action.”
Following a petition which gained nearly 17,000 signatures as of press time, a request to the Texas Department of Transportation to install pedestrian fencing along the Hwy. 242 yovers at I-45 is under consideration for funding in 2025. The fencing would provide additional barriers for those struggling with mental health issues. After losing two classmates to suicide less than one year apart, College Park High School senior Lacy Tinnell began a petition to install barriers along the Hwy. 242 yover. “These structures were not designed with that protection in mind, and it’s clear that immediate action is needed to prevent future tragedies,” Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough said.

The Woodlands forms 3 ad hoc committees The Woodlands Township board of directors created three committees to address topics such as potential plans for golf facilities on South Gosling Park on May 22 following the board’s two-day strategic planning workshop in mid-May. What you need to know During the board of directors meeting May 22, board members agreed to create three new ad hoc committees, an option municipalities and special purpose districts have to form a group of individ- uals to look into specic topics. The decision was based on discussion from the board’s strategic planning session held May 12-13. The three new committees will focus on re-evaluating the law enforcement contract with the Montgomery County Sheri’s Oce in The Woodlands, addressing transportation issues and discussing options for the South Gosling Park,

which could include a potential golng space. Directors also approved adding a new priority to the existing ad hoc committee on economic development to focus on improving pedestrian mobility in the Town Center area. Quote of note “Our law enforcement contract is up for renewal, and we have a new sheri. ... It’s a lot on one person to do with sta,” board Chair Brad Bailey said. “It’s one of our biggest spends that we have, and I think we all agree that public safety is our most important issue.”
