Six health care updates from area hospitals

4 Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Austin

5 Resolute Baptist Hospital The hospital performed its first Pulse Field Ablation cases in July 2024 using new technology for Electrophysiology. This technology facilitates the first non-thermal ablation approach, which can minimize risks associated with traditional thermal ablation. Resolute also invested in a new computed tomography scanner earlier this year, which has eliminated downtimes the facility was experiencing due to end-of-life equipment, according to an email from hospital staff.

6 St. David’s South Austin Medical Center St. David’s South Austin Medical Center renovated and expanded its women’s services unit earlier this year. According to St. David’s HealthCare CEO David Huffstutler, the expansion included new labor and delivery rooms and an additional cesarean section unit. The project also renovated existing C-section suites. The project cost $20 million and is part of St. David’s HealthCare’s plan to build nearly $1 billion in health care infrastructure across Central Texas, which includes a $249 million project at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Austin is now a designated primary stroke center, or PSC, following a national certification by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. As a PSC, the medical center offers specialized treatment for stroke patients including: • Board-certified telehealth neurologists

1 Ascension Seton Hays Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle recently opened a 17-bed observation unit aimed at improving patient comfort and increasing capacity. The new unit features private rooms, reduced noise levels and upgraded amenities. Hospital officials also completed renovations to the emergency room lobby and enclosing the registration area for patient privacy and staff safety.

2 Baylor Scott & White - Buda Medical Center

3 Christus Santa Rosa Hospital - San Marcos In May, the hospital earned an “A” grade—the highest possible rating—for health care safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization that grades U.S. hospitals based on their ability to prevent medical errors and patient harm. This marks the fifth “A” the hospital has received, according to a news release. In March, Christus Health expanded its footprint in the San Marcos area with the ribbon-cutting and grand opening of a new urgent care clinic.

Dr. Jordan Handcox joined in fall 2024 and said she aims to improve access to joint care for underrepresented populations. An orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements, Handcox is one of about 150 Black female orthopedic surgeons nationwide and one of only nine fellowship-trained in joint replacements.

• Emergency physicians • Stroke-trained nurses

The services at the medical center allow patients to receive comprehensive care in one central place, rather than having to travel to another hospital for stroke treatment.
