Harris County launches dashboard to track mosquito-borne illnesses

What residents should know

The most common mosquito-borne diseases in Harris County are West Nile, Dengue, Zika, chiku- ngunya and St. Louis Encephalitis. As of Nov. 25, 14 total cases of both West Nile and Dengue were reported. Severe reactions to look out for include low-grade fever, hives and swollen lymph nodes, ocials said. HCPH’s website features a form for residents to report potential breeding sites to the county.

Harris County Public Health ocials announced the launch of an online dashboard to update the community about human cases of mosquito-borne diseases reported in the county, outside the city of Houston. “The new dashboard is a valuable tool for residents to stay informed about mosquito- borne diseases in our area,” HCPH Emerging Diseases Director Jennifer Kiger said in a news release. Throughout the year, HCPH’s mosquito and vector control department ocials track, test, and eliminate disease-carrying mosquitoes in the county. In 2025, HCPH conrmed the West Nile virus was present in the northern section of the county, including in parts of Cypress, Spring, and Tomball.

Independent-living communities cater to older adults with limited care needs. Most include amenities, such as fitness programs, housekeeping and communal meals. Assisted-living communities specialize in providing care and supervision. These facilities frequently offer a full range of amenities as well as limited medical assistance. Memory care facilities specialize in providing care to seniors with Alzheimer's, dementia and other cognitive issues. Staff members are trained to help residents manage these diseases. Nursing home/skilled nursing facilities provide care to those with illnesses or mental conditions requiring full- time monitoring and medical care.

A urry of retail development is ongoing in the Spring and Klein areas, with at least 14 plazas expected to bring dining and shopping oerings to the area in 2026. The shell building for one such retail center, called Spring-Klein Crossing, is expected to be complete by January 2026, said David Hummel, senior vice president of Advisors Commercial Real Estate, which is leasing the center’s spaces. The almost 21,000-square-foot plaza is located near the intersection of FM 2920 and T.C. Jester Boulevard in Spring. “I can tell you that [after] speaking with all sorts of franchises in dierent industries, [the FM 2920] area around Spring-Klein has just attracted a lot of attention,” Hummel said. Explosions of activity aren’t uncommon with retail development, said Bobby Lieb, president and CEO of the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce. “The challenge that Houston has with regard to [retail development] is, because it’s market- driven, we have a boom and bust cycle where … the developers will speculate and they’ll overbuild. … When the leases don’t follow suit, then the retail development will taper o until the market can catch up,” Lieb said.

The surge in development across the Spring and Klein areas is likely due to a growing population and increased housing options that bring in residents, Lieb said. “If you’re seeing a growth in population, then retail always follows,” Lieb said. Leaders at Oklahoma-based rm Ashton Gray Developers were drawn to FM 2920 for the Spring Medtail shopping plaza, which was completed around October, Director of Leasing Michael Feighny said. Tenants at the center are slated to open in the spring. “We’re doing projects ... across the southern half of the U.S. in markets like Spring where there’s good population growth and incomes and demo- graphics,” Feighny said. The six ZIP codes that make up Community Impact ’s Spring and Klein coverage areas are: 77068, 77069, 77070, 77379, 77388 and 77389. The total population estimates for all ZIP codes com- bined grew roughly 9.6% from 2018-2023, accord- ing to U.S. Census Bureau ve-year estimates.

Many of the areas slated to welcome more stores and restaurants via the new plazas are already home to other businesses. Ozzy Guragac owns Barbarossa Coee, located at the corner of Spring Stuebner and Gosling roads, and said new development can bring convenience to the community and visibility and activity to existing businesses. How- ever, Guragac said it could also bring added pressure. “With more businesses opening, com- petition rises and the demand for consis- tent stang and high service standards increases,” Guragac said. Hummel said getting local resident feed- back was part of his company’s marketing strategy for its shopping plaza. “We were actually really trying to hone in and nd tenants that were well established, but maybe have a little bit more of a local air where you could really rely on repeat business,” Hummel said.

New offerings

New offerings Spring-Klein Crossing

Multiple retail centers in the Spring and Klein areas are expected to bring new national and local offerings to the community, including an unnamed center being leased by Edge Realty at the corner of FM 2920 and Gosling Road. The plaza has about 11,500 square feet left available for lease, and will likely be home to six or seven businesses total, including two restaurants, said Principal Kristen Barker of Edge Realty. Meanwhile, Spring-Klein Crossing will likely welcome its first tenants by the end of the first quarter of 2026, Hummel said. The Spring Medtail Center has about 9,000 square feet spoken for, Feighny said. Some of the Spring Medtail center tenants are expected to begin construction on their suites soon and open this coming spring, he added. “We are hoping to benefit the community by bringing neighborhood services that … service the community and improve the surrounding area for the folks there,” Feighny said.

Spring Interfaith aims to bridge faith divisions

With a common mission to foster an understand- ing of dierent religions in the community, Spring Interfaith was informally founded by North West Assistance Ministry members during the early 2000s and evolved into a nonprot association in March 2024. “I’ve been here ve years, and I’m just grateful to break down barriers, break down walls, and even within my own faith, look inward,” Spring Interfaith Vice Chair Diane Hunt said. “It has strengthened my faith as I’ve celebrated other faiths.” Staying local Made up of local volunteers with diverse back- grounds, religions and cultures, Spring Interfaith members join with the common goal of being a part of an organization that fosters unity and education to prevent the prejudice of others. “I can see that we’re in time now when division often makes headlines, and we want to set a vivid example of unity,” Spring Interfaith Treasurer Paulette Moore-Hall said. “I love being here, and I’m praying that we will continue because we have a story to write, and we are writing it every day.” Through the combination of religions running from Christian to Jewish and Muslim, Spring Inter- faith members also collaborate with various local organizations to further strengthen their mission. Organizations Spring Interfaith has partnered with include Red Nations Rising, Interfaith Minis- tries for Greater Houston and Together We Dine.

What else? Key programs Spring Interfaith is a part of include its annual Thanksgiving service, recurring dialogue dinners and International Peace Day. During its annual Thanksgiving service, Spring Interfaith Chair Nancy Agatei said the community is invited to unite in expressing their gratitude. Financial donations received at the service benet a dierent organization every year, such as Moving Waters Houston, a nonprot that provides mobile shower services to those in need. Meanwhile during its dialogue dinners members of the organization are invited to open their homes for a dinner and open discussion on their religion. Get involved Spring Interfaith also partakes in the Inter- national Day of Peace celebrated by joining the community to pray with meditative music bringing diverse faiths to worship together, Agatei said. In October, Spring Interfaith will partake in the Houston Festival of Faiths for the rst time. Event attendees can explore ways to cultivate communi- ties and discover dierent religions through panels and programming performances, Agatei said. Looking ahead, Agatei said Spring Interfaith hopes to encourage young adults who are inter- ested in learning about other faiths to join and keep the organization alive. “We don’t want this to end with us. We want to see the young people take initiative and join us,” Hunt said.

Spring Interfaith formally became a nonprot association in March 2024.

A few Spring interfaith members include Ooma Lakshmanan, Paulette Moore-Hall and Richard Corl.
