“As you scroll through it, it’ll basically drive itself for you,” Shuma said. Clicks over the trails included in the map reveal their names, length and hyperlinks to the city’s website. Several photos accompany each trail to give users an idea of what to expect. Information on public art is also included on the map alongside details about restrooms, benches, drinking fountains, bike repair stations and more. The walking loops included in the online tool are located within city parks. The longest one, located south of Panther Creek Parkway at Northeast Community Park, is 1.26 miles long. The new map can be accessed at geo.friscotexas.gov. Users can select “For Locals” or “For Fun” and then select the icon for “Hike & Bike Trails” to get started.
Residents of Frisco and the general public have a new tool at their disposal to discover popular hike- and-bike trails in the city. The new Frisco Trails Story Map was featured in a Dec. 30 installment of the city’s “Progress in Motion” video series. The map, which uses the city’s geographic information system technology, highlights the top 10 trails in Frisco. Specifics on more than 30 walking loops and a link to the city’s complete Hike and Bike Master Plan are also available. Chris Shuma, a GIS analyst for the city of Frisco, said the map came about through a collaboration among the city’s IT, parks and recreation, and engineering departments. Their goal, he said, was to create an easy- to-use tool for the public to see which walking routes are near them.
