Harris County approves $4M in eviction legal aid An additional $4 million in federal funding will be used for legal aid and eviction services for qualifying applicants in Harris County’s 16 eviction-handling courts after county commission- ers approved an agreement at a Dec. 19 meeting. The big picture According to Harris County’s Oce of Adminis- tration, the new money brings a total of $8 million for two agencies that handle the legal needs for eviction cases in the county—Lone Star Legal Aid, a nonprot law rm that provides free legal services, and Neighborhood Defender Services. The rst $4 million was approved in March 2023 using federal American Rescue Plan Act funding. The impact Harris County has been facing an eviction surge after rental assistance programs ended at

Harris County clinic to open $9M health lab The Quentin Mease Clinic, located nearly 3 miles east of the Texas Medical Center, will be on the receiving end of just under $9 mil- lion in federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act. That funding will support the opening of an outpatient gastroenterology lab after Har- ris County Commissioners Court approved the agreement in December. Why it matters More than 3,000 patients end up waiting for a colonoscopy due to maximum capacity constraints, according to court documents. The money will be used to create additional capacity for colonoscopy procedures and support the purchase of equipment and software licenses, according to county administration ocials.

“Even with our additional eviction dockets, the surge is creating a

bottleneck that impacts our ability to hear all civil cases in a timely manner.” LASHAWN WILLIAMS, PRESIDING JUDGE FOR HARRIS COUNTY CIVIL COURT AT LAW NO. 3

7,371 eviction appeals cases were reported by the Harris County Civil Courts at Law during the rst 11 months of 2023, more than double the prepandemic caseload of 3,568 recorded in 2018.

Humble ISD board approves Foster Elementary relocation plan

Humble ISD trustees approved a draft plan to temporarily relocate Foster Elementary students while work is completed on a replacement campus scheduled to open for the 2026-27 school year. The overview During the board’s Jan. 11 meeting, trustees approved a plan that would disseminate the students currently attending Foster Elementary to four separate HISD elementary campuses:

A closer look According to Erb, several options were explored for the relocation effort. However, 66% of the 358 parents of Foster Elementary students who responded to a survey preferred disseminating the students to existing elementary schools over alternative options. “The preferred option based on survey results adds no additional rental fees or costs to refurbish buildings, all safety and technology infrastructure meets district standards, campus learning envi- ronments support all Humble ISD programs, and this option decreases the travel distance for the Foster Elementary families,” Erb said. Erb said the proposal would keep all students outside exiting fifth graders at the same campus for the duration of construction, noting the additional students would not create capacity issues at any of the campuses. Additionally, Erb said Foster students will continue to be taught

United Airlines to complete Terminal B transformation by 2028

BY SHAHERYAR KHAN

Terminal B renovations

The details

Terminals Concourses

N. TERMINAL RD. Terminal B North Current structure will be demolished; two new concourses will be built for 22 gates for passenger planes

At a Nov. 30 groundbreaking, former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the Terminal B expansion will help reinforce IAH’s role as a gateway to other countries and prepare for the FIFA World Cup in 2026, in which Houston is a host city. The project will include: • 22 mainline narrow-body gates, which are gates for large passenger planes, in the north concourse • 18 larger regional jet gates in the south concourse • 115,000 square feet of food and retail space “Houston serves as a critical point for United’s network, facilitating connections to Mexico, the Caribbean and South America,” Grith said. The project will be funded with $2 billion from United Airlines and $600 million from the city. The city’s funding for the project will stem from enterprise funds derived from charges paid by airport passengers, agreed upon during a Nov. 15 Houston City Council meeting. “We’re eager to collaborate with the incoming [city of Houston Controller Chris Hollins], addressing any queries,” said Mario Diaz, executive director of the Houston Airport System. “Our partnership with United Airlines and the nancing team ensures our readiness, aiming for a swift resolution.”

What’s next?

The timeline

The impact

As Brown’s term came to an end Jan. 1, recently elected City Controller Chris Hollins will take over the decision- making process regarding the project. “United has been a key partner in highlighting our region on the global stage, and I’m excited to welcome United’s expansion in Houston once I’m condent sucient due diligence has been done,” Hollins said. In 2024, more signicant changes and construction phases are expected to occur at Terminal B, Grith said. The progress will continue in 2025 with ongoing construction and enhancements, gradually shaping the terminal’s new features. By summer 2026, Terminal B North Concourse will be completed, and Terminal B South Concourse will be complete by early 2028, Grith said.

Grith said the project involved detailed planning over the past year and a half. Former Houston City Controller Chris Brown’s nancial inquiries delayed part of the agreement’s funding, raising questions about nancial implications and details, including United Airlines’ credit rating in November, according to previous reporting.

Grith said he projects signicant job creation during and after construction, estimating around 1,500 new hires in 2024, adding to the 2,100 employees United Airlines hired in 2023. “Our goal is to transform George Bush Intercontinental Airport into one of the best and most enjoyable airports nationwide,” Grith said. “To achieve this, as our ights increase, we’ll hire more employees for ground operations, customer service and other areas.”

Terminal B expansion timeline

• May 31, 2023: Plans are proposed to Houston City Council’s Economic Development Committee. • Nov. 8: Houston City Controller Chris Brown declines approval for the project. • Nov. 15: Houston City Council unanimously approves the Terminal B project. • Third quarter of 2026: Terminal B North is expected to reach completion. • First quarter of 2028: Terminal B South is expected to reach completion. • Nov. 30: Terminal B project breaks ground.

Nitro Nutrition boasts health-conscious oerings Couple Bailee Weaver and James Burns acquired Nitro Nutrition in September to help residents of the Porter community accomplish their health and nutrition goals. The business is one of several beverage-based businesses to open in the Lake Houston area in 2023. The setup Weaver, who previously worked for Nitro Nutrition while she was in college, said she fell in love with the concept’s oerings. She frequently spent money on Nitro Nutrition products and eventually persuaded her ance, Burns, to try them. Both Weaver and Burns enjoyed Nitro Nutrition products so much, that when the shop became available for sale, the couple bought it. The details Nitro Nutrition oers Herbalife products, such as protein shakes, protein waes and energy teas. Weaver said the protein shakes oered are soy based, contain 200-250 calories and are full meal replacement shakes. The business’s protein waes are made from its protein shakes and contain active probiotics. Designed for mental focus, loaded teas contain 200 milligrams of caeine, are low in calories and contain vitamins AE. Specialty teas contain less caeine and protein, making the tea a snack-based product. Meanwhile, Weaver said beauty line teas contain biotin and collagen, and the kitchen sink teas contain protein, biotin, collagen and vitamins AE.

A variety of loaded teas, specialty teas, beauty line teas and kitchen sink teas are available.
