Planning for the future
With the new comprehensive plan, town leaders emphasized retaining Argyle’s rural aesthetics.
COURTESY MESSAGE MASTERS, MATTHEW HOOVER PHOTOGRAPHER
New Argyle comprehensive plan seeks to manage growth as population continues to increase
Maintaining open spaces and rural aesthetics were priorities when drafting the new plan, in addition to enhancing neighborhoods, bolstering long-term stability and ensuring new development complements the town’s character, he said.
The plan, approved in June, updates one from 2018 and will help steer the town’s growth—while preserving its history—over the next several years. “It’s really putting that heavier commercial and real estate development out [near Interstate] 35,” Bradford said.
BY DON MUNSCH
Like many residents, Argyle Mayor Rick Bradford moved to the town because he said he liked the schools and the rural feel. Argyle leaders aim to maintain these town traits with the approval of the comprehensive plan update.

Flower Mound forms new bond committee On July 1, a new committee was set up in Flower Mound to create recommendations for capital improvements in town for the first time in 22 years. What you need to know The town is now facing capital demands that necessitate the engagement of a bond committee to package the projects before sending the decision to council, a council agenda memo states. The committee needed to be established this summer so council can receive the recommendations by the end of the year and call for a May election by early February, town officials said. “Our existing infrastructure is aging,” said Mayor Cheryl Moore via email. “In addition to this, we have a growing population who are using [amenities].”
Trotter Park design OK’d by Flower Mound council At a July 15 meeting, Flower Mound Town Council approved a conceptual master plan for the brand new Trotter Park, located on the west side of Flower Mound. The details The plan includes 12 pickleball courts and a half- mile trail. In addition, the 13-acre park will have a playground, basketball courts, a plaza and two tennis courts, among other amenities. The park will be located in the 4500 block of Cross Timbers Road. With the passage of the plan, town staff and representatives from consulting firm MHS Planning and Design will make modifications to the initial plan and adjust parking as needed, Chuck Jennings, town parks and recreation director said. Town staff plan to move forward with the design of the park next fiscal year.

Construction wraps up on new AISD elementary Construction has finished on Argyle ISD’s newest campus, Jane Ruestmann Elementary, which will serve prekindergarten through fifth grade students. The campus is part of the 2022 bond package, which funded building new schools to accommo- date the expected enrollment increases over the next decade, according to the district’s 10-year strategic plan. The campus is situated along Cleveland Gibbs Road in Northlake. The gist The district was able to expedite construction and plans to have a certificate of occupancy by July, per district documents. The district began moving staff belongings to Jane Ruestmann on July 15, which will allow teachers to set up before school starts, Construc- tion Manager Jeff Koehn said.
Argyle ISD officials refute Title IX changes Argyle ISD refuted federal changes to Title IX aimed at expanding protections for LGBTQ+ and pregnant students. On July 15, trustees approved a resolution denouncing the new regulations, saying they undermine student rights and protections. The details District officials took issue with a mandate that “prohibits schools from treating or sep- arating students differently based on their biological sex,” including gender identity. The language in the changes contradict a 2021 state law that mandates athletes play on teams based on the sex listed on their original birth certificate, officials said. The Title IX changes are on hold in Texas, which has taken action to halt implementa- tion at various court levels.
District ocials received a certicate of occupancy for the new Jane Ruestmann Elementary in July.

“The timeline is exciting,” board President Sam Slaton said. “It’s fortunate that the teachers will be able to get in on time.” Going forward After the new school opens in August, the district plans to hold a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the campus Sept. 25, Superintendent Courtney Carpenter said. Jane Ruestmann, the school’s namesake and a former AISD teacher of more than 40 years, will be in attendance.

The comprehensive plan focuses on multiple elements, including future land use and thoroughfare and corridor design. The plan is expected to remain in place for ve to 10 years, said Nabila Nur, community development director for the town. The town’s growth since 2018 was one of the reasons for the update, Nur said. “[Residents are] going to continue to see our emphasis on preserving ... all those things that attracted people to Argyle,” Bradford said. Nur added that the plan will help developers understand the town’s vision and needs when pitching or building a project. “My primary concerns [when helping draft the plan] were for the location of commercially zoned property, maintaining a rural feel as residential expanded and the growing trac issues,” Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee member John Critz said.

each of these roadway projects get underway.” While the plan looks at adding park spaces, Bradford said it will be a challenge to create new parks as there’s not a lot of undeveloped land left in Argyle. He added town leaders are working with developers to explore ways to incorporate park spaces into their designs.
The updated plan focuses on projects along FM 407, where many businesses are moving, Bradford said. “Our goal is to work with Denton County, North- lake and [the Texas Department of Transportation] to prioritize [managing that area],” he said. “It’s going to be a challenge over the next few years as
The plan’s eects will play out over a number of years as growth continues. Town leaders said amendments, modications and renements will be needed to keep the plan current, and a major update of the plan will be needed every ve years. The CPAC may also meet to review the implementation status of the actions identied in the plan. Nur said there are ways of seeing how the plan will come into eect. “Any zoning case that comes to us, we’re going to refer to the [comprehensive] plan more and more to make sure it arms the vision that we have set,” she said. One development that is coming, Argyle Landing, is a mixed-use development near I-35 that will bring 198 single-family homes and a couple of commercial pads, Nur told Community Impact in January. Sally Aldridge, president and CEO of the Metroport Chamber, which includes Argyle, said the new plan will not have an immediate impact as commercial growth for the remaining portion of town will take a few years.

Nur said she hopes that when developers come into Argyle, they will see the comprehensive plan and realize town ocials have a vision to include green and gathering spaces designated for the community. Angie Mastrocola, senior vice president for Hillwood Communities and project manager for the nearby Harvest by Hillwood development, said her company appreciates any opportunity to “collaborate with cities to help them understand the benets of high-quality new home communi- ties so they can manage their growth long-term.”

New monthly farmers market brings fresh goods to Argyle Emily Holt found a need for fresh produce in Argyle, so she and others put their heads together to create a farmers market. In May, the Argyle TX Farmers Market opened behind Holt’s business, Argyle Party and Gift. The market, which carries goods from Texas farmers and ranchers within a 100-mile radius, is open from 9 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month, said Holt, who serves as the market’s manager and advisory board head. The market will remain open until October and will be open April-October next year. “There had been a lot of Facebook posts asking for a farmers market, and the challenge with Argyle is people don’t have a place to do things,” Holt said. “We don’t have a town square or any place [to gather]. I lease this place for the store, and there is a great backyard area, so I was like,

‘Hey, let’s do it.’” The background
Holt hails from a farming family in Kingsville that had a huge home garden, so she said farmers markets are “very foundational” to her life. She added that her background provided the impetus for her to help start the market. The market has a maximum of 15 vendors and features a booth with a dierent local nonprot each month. The nonprot booth will also feature a book about Argyle written by the late Lynn Sheeld Simmons, an author, educator, historian and community volunteer who was a freelance writer for several newspapers and mag- azines, will be available for purchase, according to the farmers market Facebook page. Zooming in The market is not an artisan market, so items such as jewelry, T-shirts and candles are not sold there, Holt said. Among the foods the market oers are meats, eggs, honey, dairy products and canned items. “We are always searching for more produce,” Holt said. “We have produce now, but we need more.” Holt said the feedback from the community has been “amazing,” adding that the seven advisory board members bring various talents to the market by helping with social media or generating interest in the community.

She said the market will require continued support for its success, as vendors, including those who come from outside the area, need assurance they will have consistent sales. The market is one of only three Texas Depart- ment of Agriculture-certied markets in Denton County, Holt said. “The community has asked for this and we have provided a place for this, but it’s going to require their continued support to make it continue,” Holt said.

burgers, salads and fondue. “We try to have something for everyone,” Swaney said. She added that the French onion soup, lobster bisque and French dip sandwiches are among the most popular items. French wines are mostly featured on the wine list, which has around 200 wines. What else? Swaney said Vieux Carré looks to maintain an atmosphere that is “upscale but not uptight” so people can have a good time. “We try to make the [restaurant] more approachable, ... we want to be the family place that they go to hang out,” Scott said.
Carrie Britton wanted a relatable type of French restaurant when she opened Vieux Carré. The restaurant’s name, which means old square in French, opened in August 2023 at Parker Square.
