Looking ahead

Georgetown Country Club member Fred Stein said playing golf supplements his daily exercise. “I think as you age, getting out both socially and physically is very important,” he said. The 18-hole course at Georgetown Country Club overlooks the San Gabriel River, with both at portions and some elevation changes that make it accessible for those of dierent abilities, Zeske said. “Even if they’re not in a good enough shape to walk [the] full 18 [holes], you still get steps going from the cart to the ball,” Zeske said. “We’ve seen a pretty good increase in walkers choosing to walk instead of taking a cart.” Zeske also said the club is seeing an inux of younger folks playing golf and coming out to the course more often. “I play competitively, but I know that it is a form of exercise, so I treat it that way,” said Sean Mullen, the head golf professional at Georgetown Country Club. “It’s a primary source of activity and exercise for a lot of my friends here.”

Sun City residents will have another golf course to choose from with construction on a shorter nine-hole course beginning soon, Phillips said. Expected to open in late 2026, Phillips said the par-3 course will be funded by developer Pulte Homes and managed by the Sun City Texas Community Association. Phillips said golf remains a lifelong passion for many Sun City residents because it adapts to the player, and is low impact, customizable and forgiving on the joints. “Golf involves a lot of exibility, a lot of mobility, and you’re obviously using your joints,” Handcox said. “Being exible [and] staying mobile helps keep you exible and mobile in the future.” Additionally, as players age or recover from injury or surgery, golf allows for modications, such as taking a cart, using closer tee boxes and playing fewer holes, Handcox said.

Georgetown Country Club member Fred Stein said playing golf is part of his exercise routine.
