CONNECTING THE NORTHWESTCORRIDOR

The 9-mile project will help link the 183A Toll and MoPac express lanes and will change mobility in the northwest corridor. 4 NEW EXPRESS LANES 18 $612 LANES WIDE MILLION

The interchange at US 183 and MoPac is the southern starting point for the massive 183 North project that aims to add four lanes of toll road to US 183. (Courtesy Jeerson Carroll)

183North project prepares to transformCedar Park, Leander commute As workers slowly return to oces, Jennifer Garcia has had to adjust to a commute that takes her from her home on the border of Leander and Cedar Park to her job in East Austin. To speed up that drive, Garcia pays the toll fees on 183A Toll and 183 South. “Time is very important to me. If I can get to work and start working faster and harder, that’s very important to me,” Garcia said. “Also getting home for my work-life balance … [is] very important. I don’t appreciate sitting in trac.” While her commute takes her down a 9-mile stretch of US 183 from SH 45/RM 620 to MoPac without toll roads, that is about to change. In early 2022, the Cen- tral Texas Regional Mobility Authority plans to begin a $612 million project to expand the highway in both directions, with $104 million in funding coming from the Texas Department of Transportation. The Mobility Authority project would add a total of four express lanes and two general-purpose lanes, making it 18 lanes wide in some locations. Garcia said she is excited to have the added express lane option. CONTINUED ON 26 BY BENTON GRAHAM

ABOUT US

Owners John and Jennifer Garrett launched the rst edition of Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 with three full-time employees covering Round Rock and Pugerville, Texas. We have expanded our operations to include hundreds of employees, our own printing operation and over 30 hyperlocal editions across three states. Our circulation is over 2 million residential mailboxes, and it grows each month with new residents and developments.

HIGHLIGHTS FROMTHISMONTH

FROMDENISE: Each January we publish our Annual Community Guide. We love to share with our readers the new restaurants and shops that have opened up in 2021 or that plan to open in 2022. If you like to support local businesses in the area, check out these guides (see Pages 11-17). I want to wish you all a prosperous and Happy New Year! Denise Seiler, GENERALMANAGER

Community Impact Newspaper teams include general managers, editors, reporters, graphic designers, sales account executives and sales support, all immersed and invested in the communities they serve. Our mission is to build communities of informed citizens and thriving businesses through the collaboration of a passionate team. Our core values are Faith, Passion, Quality, Innovation and Integrity.

FROMEDDIE: I have a friend contemplating a move to the Austin area—I know, I know—and he asked me about the trac. Between this month’s front-page story on the 183 North project and recent coverage of diverging diamond intersections and other endeavors, despite our region’s historic growth, our roads and commutes appear to be a top priority. Eddie Harbour, EDITOR

Our purpose is to be a light for our readers, customers, partners and each other.

RISING COSTS

Declining ridership as a result of the pandemic signicantly increased the cost per resident to provide rail service in the city of Leander by over 500%.

Findings from a Leander transit study showed the nancial impact the pandemic had on Capital Metro service costs and presented alternative transit options for the city’s sales tax-based program. Leander City Council rst discussed placing the city’s Capital Metro involvement on a future ballot in May 2020 for voters to decide whether to stay in or leave the public transportation provider. Council later requested additional data regarding Capital Metro involvement in Leander. The Goodman Corp., a Houston-based rm, presented transit study ndings to Leander City Council on Dec. 16. Leander residents have access to Metro Pickup service, Metro Rail service and MetroExpress bus service. Capital Metro ridership dropped about 85% due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, each trip cost about $39 per Leander resident. This was in line with the Capital Metro and national averages, said Robert McHaney, a representative from The Goodman Corp. But the cost per trip increased to $214 per trip this fall. Peer cities in Texas contribute $2 million-$3 million to transit, McHaney said. But Leander is projected to spend

Transit scenarios ranged from $1.2 million-$2.9 million depending on the number of trips oered and employees. Models did not include rail service, which would cost about $10 million per year to contract.

Bell Boulevard project to nish in January

CURRENT ALIGNMENT

N

183A TOLL

BY TAYLOR GIRTMAN

A majority of road work on the Bell Boulevard realignment is expected to be complete by the end of January, according to the city of Cedar Park. The project moves a section of Bell Boulevard to the alignment of Old US 183 between Buttercup Creek Bou- levard and Cedar Park Drive. Lanes were shifted to the new alignment in August. In December, road striping was completed, according to the city.

Remaining work includes construc- tion over the Capital Metro line on East Park Street, minor paving, sidewalk tie-ins, curb and gutter tie-ins, landscaping, and additional striping and signage.
