Prior to his appointment, Unger served as the principal of Benjamin Banneker Elementary School in Kansas City starting in 2019. Before that, he was the Dean of students at the Gregory-Lincoln Education Center in Houston. As an elementary school principal, he led the development of campus plans to increase student achievement and attendance and focused on equity, according to RRISD documents. officials approved a pilot program to allow students who live outside the district’s boundaries to enroll at select campuses for the 2022-23 academic year during a June 16 RRISD meeting. The board of trustees approved the measure, which district staff brought forth at a June 16 meeting as a method of increasing enrollment, in a 4-0 vote. Basic allotment and average daily attendance funding for inter-district transfer students would follow them to RRISD, Chief Financial Officer Dennis Covington told the board at a May 19 meeting. District administrative staff selected 13 elementary and two mid- dle school campuses to participate in the pilot program. Intra-district transfers will receive priority for the program, according to district information.

the vote. The board also voted 5-0 to begin the process of appointing someone to fill the position until the school board election in November, when the community will elect a new trustee to fill the seat. The board will accept applications for the board seat through July 12. The winner of the November 2022 election will serve out the remain- der of the term, which expires in November 2024. Xiao was first elected to the board in November 2020.
