MISD sees rise in bilingual students
enrolling for school. The English as a second language, or ESL, program is meant to develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, and writing in English, according to MISD. Approximately 2,200 students are in the ESL program and over 50 languages are spoken amongst the district’s bilingual students. What else? Molly Hovan, MISD’s executive director of elementary school leadership, said there is a waiting list for students seeking to learn Spanish to enter the district’s two-way dual language program. This has prompted a need for the district to review its current resources for the program.
Kindness Adds Up!
The number of students who are learning the English language is rising in McKinney ISD. The district has seen a 31.85% increase in emergent bilingual students in the past five school years, said Zabdi Gonzalez, MISD’s senior director of the English learner support team. District officials set 2025-26 calendar
• Spring break: March 16-20 • Last day of school: May 21, 2026 Additional student holidays include Labor Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day and Good Friday. Graduation for all three high schools is planned for May 22 at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen.
McKinney ISD students will return to school next year Aug. 12, 2025. The district’s board of trustees approved the academic calendar Dec. 16. Here are some important dates to note for students: • Fall break: Oct. 13-17 • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 24-28 • Winter break: Dec. 22-Jan. 2
