Flower Mound OKs new tax zone Flower Mound Town Council voted to designate an area on the west side of town as a second tax increment reinvestment zone, also called a TIRZ, during its meeting Nov. 6. The approval—in a 3-2 vote with Jim Engel, Ann Martin and Brian Taylor voting for the measure, and Adam Schiestel and Chris Drew opposing—comes with the cre- ation of a board of directors and establish- ment of a tax increment fund for the zone. A TIRZ is an economic development tool that can be used by municipalities and counties to finance infrastructure costs in specific geographic areas, according to the council agenda. The background The new TIRZ is the second for the town, as its first TIRZ was established in September 2005 to provide funds for public infrastructure within the FM 2499 corridor. It consists of about 1,465 acres and “contin- ues to accomplish the goals under which it was created,” according to a council agenda.

Anna Thorsen, communications specialist for the town, said in an email that Ridnour’s last day will be March 28, and Kancel’s official retirement

This project aims to widen the existing two-lane roadway—one lane going north and one lane going south—to a four-lane, divided roadway, providing two lanes in each direction with a median for enhanced trac ow and safety. Robert White, public works director for the town
Motorists who travel US 377 in south Denton County will notice a wider road in the next several years as the area prepares for more population growth, which in turn will bring more motorists. Texas Department of Transportation ocials plan to expand the road from two lanes to four lanes from Flower Mound to Argyle. The project also extends to Roanoke. But when the project will begin is up in the air, as the funding still needs to be found, said Tila Grant, public information ocer for the TxDOT Dallas District. However, work has started on certain aspects of the project, such as utility relocation, which should nish by the end of 2024. The estimated project cost from FM 1171 to Crawford Road in Argyle is $84 million, Grant said in an email. “Currently, there is no xed construction schedule for this project,” Grant said. “We plan to develop a construction schedule in collaboration with the contractor once the project is [ready to receive bids from contractors].” She said TxDOT expects to start receiving bids in early 2025. The project is in the design phase, which began in 2019, Grant said.

TxDOT plans to add a sidewalk running on each side of US 377. Approximately 16 acres of right of way is needed, TxDOT ocials said. Only six acres of right of way is needed for the portion of the US 377 project that runs south from FM 1171 to Hwy. 114 in Roanoke, TxDOT ocials said. The estimated cost of that project is $80 million. TxDOT ocials actively coordinate with town of Argyle and Denton County ocials on this project. “Additionally, we are in close coordination with the town of Flower Mound, which has utilities in the project corridor,” Grant said.

Assisted-living communities specialize in providing care and supervision. These facilities frequently offer a full range of amenities as well as limited medical assistance. Memory care facilities specialize in providing care to seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive issues. Staff members are trained to help residents manage these diseases. Hospice care is intended to relieve symptoms and suffering associated with a terminal illness in those who have been given six months or less to live. The patient must choose to forgo further curative treatment. Nursing home/skilled nursing facilities provide care to those with illnesses or mental conditions requiring full- time monitoring and medical care.

Argyle senior group reopens as a nonprot organization The Argyle Senior Citizens Organization has a new kind of identity—and wants to attract more members. in the area, as the senior group allows people to join the group.
In September, the organization relaunched as a 501(c)(3) nonprot with a celebration announcing the new status and with a new board. The rst board meeting was in September. The background Organization Vice President Sherri Myers said the group used to be under the town’s umbrella. Myers, who used to be a council member in Argyle, said the board decided to separate from the town and become a nonprot. The group now holds its meetings at the community room at the Southwest Courthouse, 6200 Canyon Falls Drive in Flower Mound, where the senior group oers monthly luncheons. “We are completely in control of what we want to do, how we want to do it, and how it’s funded,” she said, explaining the changes afoot with the organization. Zooming in She said the group averages about 50 seniors partici- pating in activities, but now that the group is no longer under the town’s umbrella, and with the change of location, the group can expand its reach, Myers said. Deep connections exist with Argyle ISD, Myers said, and interest is developing from some seniors who live
“And we’ve got a lot of new folks that have moved here following their kids and grandkids, and they really haven’t had a place to connect, so we’re hoping to open up that opportunity where they feel like they can connect with a local senior group,” she said, noting there is not a senior citizen community center in this particular area. What you need to know The group tries to meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Friday of the month. The group has a Facebook page, and it seeks to give back to the community. “Each month, we’ve kind of been looking at things that we can do to not only be served but serve,” she said. She said the group has been involved in toy and food drives. Myers said the group has to raise money to support itself, and a donor will match money up to $10,000. The group is halfway there, she said. “Right now, our goal is to connect to the commu- nity and create a space for anybody that is looking to connect,” she said. “We are pretty much open to Denton County. We don’t have an age limit, although 50-plus is [ne].”

Taro Kitchen and Cocktail cooks Latin fusion Marvin Revolorio, owner and executive chef of Taro Kitchen and Cocktail in Highland Village, opened the restaurant after a lifetime of experience. Revolorio opened his rst restaurant in Guatemala when he was 20 years old, he said. The details Revolorio later opened Taro in April 2022 at 41 years old. The restaurant is the culmination of all his experi- ence into a Latin American fusion cuisine What’s on the menu For appetizers, Taro serves thin salted chips made from taro, a root vegetable similar to a potato that also serves as the restaurant’s namesake, Revolorio said. Taro root is also a key component of the Taro Breeze, a drink which blends a chilled taro root puree with vodka. But the menu hinges on signature dishes, such as the ahi tuna ceviche. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he said. Going forward Revolorio runs his kitchen with passion and encour- ages his sta to follow suit in everything from prepara- tion to service and hospitality, he said. “If the kitchen is happy, then the food is happy, and the customers will leave happy,” he said. “Cooking for others shows love even without talking, and this is my passion,” he said.

The rst expansion to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in nearly two decades will start in early 2024. Airport ocials announced plans in May 2019 to construct Terminal F, but when the pandemic hit the next year, CEO Sean Donohue announced the project would be put on hold. In May 2023, the airport and American Airlines ocials signed a 10-year use and lease agreement on a $4.8 billion project that would construct Terminal F, the rst addition of a new terminal since 2005. Expansion of the central terminal area will include a major reimagining of Terminal C, “pier” expansions o Terminal A and Terminal C, and signicant upgrades to roadways and terminal access. Construction of a new Terminal F will feature a 15-gate concourse with modernized baggage handling, expanded concessions and additional passenger gates. $4.8B project to expand facilities

The backstory
What’s next
The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill to create the North Texas Regional Airport Author- ity in 1967, according to the Texas House Historical Association. The authority led to the creation of the airport, which broke ground in 1968 near the city limits of Euless, Irving and Grapevine. Later, Coppell would also house portions of the airport.
DFW Airport is celebrating a milestone anni- versary next year as Jan. 13, 2024, will mark 50 years since its rst commercial ight. The airport was ocially dedicated on Sept. 22, 1973, when a Concorde jet from France landed in the U.S. for the rst time, according to airport spokesperson Cynthia Vega.
The new terminal is expected to add up to 25 gates beyond DFW Airport’s 2023 total. Airport ocials expect the numbers of travelers ying in and out to increase as well.
