Council approves zoning request for Hugs Cafe HQ

The proposed Hugs Cafe Inc. headquarters is set to move forward after McKinney City Council members voted 6-0 to approve the request during an April 15 meeting. Council member Michael Jones abstained from vot- ing because he sits on Hugs Cafe’s board of directors. The $10 million facility will house Hugs Cafe, a nonprofit organization that offers training and employment for adults with developmental disabilities. In a nutshell The new zoning allows for nonprofit trade school uses at the new building, city docu- ments state. The two-story facility will be located at the northeast corner of Andrews Street and Green Street.

The change would require restaurant drive-thru buildings and speaker boxes be located at least 200 feet away from single-family residential uses or zones, according to city documents. That distance can be lowered based on specific circumstances. Currently, the city’s development code only requires a 20-foot minimum distance between speaker boxes and a residential zone. Existing restaurants not in compliance will be in legal nonconforming status but will be able to continue operating.
