Ciara Lindley, a home organizer and owner of Sorted Spaces & Design, recommends organizing oce spaces tomaintainmental clarity and to keep work at work. Lindley said some steps may vary among workspaces and lifestyles, and organizing is a “trial and error” process. Ciara Lindley suggests setting aside extra time to sort papers and les because it can be time-consuming. Filing systems should be easily maintained, so here are some of Lindley’s steps to manage papers and les. HOWTOTACKLE PAPERWORK ANDFILES:

1 Empty and clean: Take everything out of the shelves, desk and baskets. Start with non-paper items rst because paper can be time-consuming. Dust and clean shelves and the desk before items are organized and placed back. 2 Declutter and sort: Sort items into four piles: keep, relocate, trash or recycle, and sell or donate. Again, start with non-paper items and sort them into the piles. Unused oce items can be donated to teachers or places such as The Salvation Army. Misplaced items can be relocated to their proper place in your house.
3 Arrange furniture and layout: Rearrange furniture to place the desk with a window view and without a glare on the computer screen. Place les in an accessible location, and keep a trash can nearby. Create zones or stations throughout the oce such as a work area, reference material shelves, a mail zone or a daily supplies area. If you videoconference frequently, make sure your

Lindley said the IRS is a good resource for how long to keep papers such as receipts, bank statements, bills and taxes. • Organize needed papers and documents with an accessible system. Label les, binders, folders and baskets. Lindley said items are easier to locate with more specic labels, and color coding les is essential because people respond visually better to colors than labels. • Consider digitizing documents or keep digital notes with apps like Google Keep or Evernote. • Use a desktop ler to keep often- needed les at hand.

This can also be scheduled before starting work each morning. Clear away dishes, clean o desk supplies and make sure action items are complete.
