For all the unknowns in the 2020-21 school year, Leander ISD ocials have said at least one thing is certain: The district’s virtual learning model for the fall will be much more eective than the model that was rushed out in the spring. All of LISD’s approximately 42,000 students were scheduled to begin 100% virtual learning Aug. 13— after this edition went to press. On Sept. 8, based on a decision made by their families, students will start either 100% virtual or 100% in-person instruc- tion. Elementary school families have a third option, CONTINUED ON 22

Take a look at the options (see Pages 22-23) to nd out more on children returning to school. FROMBRIAN: My late father had a joke about pets that goes something like this: “A dog looks at its human and thinks: ‘You feed me; you house me; you love me. You must be God!’ A cat looks at its human and thinks: ‘You feed me; you house me; you love me. I must be God!’” Dog vs. cat feuds aside, this month’s special section on pets features services throughout our area, popular breeds, a shelters update and the potential behavioral health benets pets have on children. We’re in a happy place right now. We’re grooving,” she said. After seeing a photo of a puppy on THH’s social media, Candice Roy knew she found her new dog. “I scrolled past his picture, and I was like ‘Holey moley, my dog is here again,’” she said. Roy, a Leander resident, adopted Hank in early May after one of her dogs passed away in February. Roy said she rst looked at breed rescues, but many were closed during the pandemic. So she turned to local shelters like THH. Adopting during a pandemic brought benets and challenges to the adoption. Roy is able to spend more time with Hank at home, but Hank is not able to learn to socialize. “As far as getting to meet other puppies, that was very challenging,” she said.

In March, Central Texas SPCA closed its doors to public visitors, placed cats into foster homes and made appointments for dogs to meet potential adopters outside the building. With owners spending more time at home, Nemec suggests that owners train the dog or cat to be alone. “It would be just very shocking if all of a sudden you were at home with them 24 hours a day, and then they’re gone for eight hours.” Some increased adoptions at THH are due to other regional shelters closing or limiting adoptions. McFer- rin said lines formed outside the shelter on occassion. The shelter has also had increased demand on its low-cost clinic days as people seek aordable pet services. Two Leander shelters have adjusted their practices to rescue and nd homes for cats and dogs in a pandemic. Central Texas SPCA has continued nding homes for its rescued animals. Shelter Manager Stacy Nemec said the shelter found homes for 75 dogs and 31 cats between Jan. 1-June 30. Though Central Texas SPCA is not breaking its record, they are on par with regular adoption numbers despite changes in daily adoption practices. At Texas Humane Heroes, however, the nonprot animal shelter is on track to break its 2019 adoption record with 2,017 adoptions through the rst six months of 2020. In 2012, she founded TheWhole Child Center in Cedar Park, where she works with children facing challenges that include trauma, anxiety, depres- sion and behavioral concerns. She is a licensed professional counselor and a registered play therapist supervisor. W ithmore people working fromhome, it is important to have a func- tional, organized workspace beyond the kitchen table. Ciara Lindley, a home organizer and owner of Sorted Spaces & Design, recommends organizing oce spaces tomaintainmental clarity and to keep work at work. Lindley said some steps may vary among workspaces and lifestyles, and organizing is a “trial and error” process. Overall, an organized workspace will cut down on wasted time and increase productivity levels. with Ciara Lindley from Sorted Spaces & Design BY TAYLOR GIRTMAN Tips froman organizer
Ciara Lindley suggests setting aside extra time to sort papers and les because it can be time-consuming. Filing systems should be easily maintained, so here are some of Lindley’s steps to manage papers and les. HOWTOTACKLE PAPERWORK ANDFILES:

1 Empty and clean: Take everything out of the shelves, desk and baskets. Start with non-paper items rst because paper can be time-consuming. Dust and clean shelves and the desk before items are organized and placed back. 2 Declutter and sort: Sort items into four piles: keep, relocate, trash or recycle, and sell or donate. Again, start with non-paper items and sort them into the piles. Unused oce items can be donated to teachers or places such as The Salvation Army. Misplaced items can be relocated to their proper place in your house.
3 Arrange furniture and layout: Rearrange furniture to place the desk with a window view and without a glare on the computer screen. Place les in an accessible location, and keep a trash can nearby. Create zones or stations throughout the oce such as a work area, reference material shelves, a mail zone or a daily supplies area. If you videoconference frequently, make sure your

Lindley said the IRS is a good resource for how long to keep papers such as receipts, bank statements, bills and taxes. • Organize needed papers and documents with an accessible system. Label les, binders, folders and baskets. Make use of vertical or horizontal wall space with pinboards, magnet boards, tall shelving units or hanging les. 4 Organize: Place daily items in close proxim- ity to your desk, and keep action items on the desktop. Avoid visual clutter by hiding cords behind desks or organize cords with cord con- cealers or binder clips. Keep decor to a minimum to limit visual stimulation while focusing, but do include a few personal touches. 5 Schedule daily reset: Set aside time after the workday to touch up the oce space for a fresh workspace for the next day. This can also be scheduled before starting work each morning. Clear away dishes, clean o desk supplies and make sure action items are complete.

BUSINESS FEATURE GunsWarehouse Cedar Park business has been serving community and law enforcement since 2015 A fter nearly 20 years of working in and owning gun shops in Austin, Russ Friesz decided to look homeward for his next business venture. Friesz moved to Cedar Park in 1998 and watched as the city grew gradually—then rapidly—around him. “I saw a need here in Cedar Park,” he said. Guns Warehouse opened for business on July 7, 2015, in The Railyard at 601 E. Whitestone Blvd., Ste. 712, and recently marked its fth anniversary. Friesz said the move to Cedar Park was a smart one. “We love being here. We just love Cedar Park,” he said. On a recent Friday afternoon, the feeling seemed mutual. There were consistently six to eight cus- tomers in the store. Everyone, including Friesz and his employees, were wearing masks and observing social distancing. Friesz said the rst six months of 2020 was the busiest period in his experience as a gun shop owner. “We’re always busy, but this is the busiest we’ve ever been,” Friesz said. “There’s been a huge uptick in home defense. There’s a huge rst-time gun owner crowd, due mostly to recent events.” Some might be surprised at who are buying guns, according to Friesz. “This year in particular, there are more female buyers now than in the history of rearms,” he said. To complete a purchase, gun buyers must rst pass a background check run through the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, which is performed at the time of purchase and, for 80% of customers, usually takes less than 15 minutes, Friesz said. It may take longer, up to three business days, for those with common names, he said. Restrictions due to coronavirus concerns have created shortages in guns and ammunition, accord- ing to Friesz. However, he said Guns Warehouse has plenty of inventory for both products. Friesz said the shop has hundreds of rearms in stock, from discreet, concealable pistols to ries and shotguns for hunting big game. MOST POPULAR HANDGUNS While Guns Warehouse sells a variety of ries and shotguns, handguns are the most popular rearms, according to Guns Warehouse owner Russ Friesz. He said pistols—for personal and home protec- tion—are by far the biggest seller, and law enforce- ment make up a big portion of his clientele. For repairs and modications, Guns Warehouse oers general gunsmithing, according to Friesz, and partners with other people for certication courses. GunsWarehouse 601 E.
