Most schools see attendance zone changes under newly approved maps
The backstory
GISD will open San Gabriel Elementary School in the Santa Rita Ranch neighborhood and the new Benold Middle School in the Parmer Ranch subdivision for the 2024-25 school year. Both of these schools are located in the growing northwest quadrant of the district. Eventually, the district will repurpose the old Benold Middle School campus into a new elemen- tary school. Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in May showed Georgetown is the fastest-growing city in the country among cities with a population of more than 50,000 residents—and that stretch is being felt at the campus level. Cooper, Mitchell, Williams and Wolf Ranch elementary schools; Tippit and Wagner middle schools; and East View High School have student populations that are at or near capacity, according to the most recent report from Temple- ton Demographics.
Still, district documents show the new maps include zone adjustments for all middle school campuses and all elementary school campuses, except for McCoy Elementary School. The board’s action comes as the district has reached what Superintendent Devin Padavil has described as a “critical” point of growth. The district began the 2023-24 school year with 600 more students than in the 2022-23 school year.
Georgetown ISD trustees approved boundary adjustments Jan. 16 ahead of two new schools opening this fall. At district sta’s recommendation, trustees approved Plan 9 for elementary schools and Plan 5 for middle schools. District sta said these plans will provide relief to all aected campuses while rezoning as few families as possible in anticipation of future new schools. District sta also said they are less drastic than other plans proposed.

District sta said parents of middle and elementary school students will be able to request that they are “grandfathered” under the rezoning, allowing them to remain at their current campuses for the 2024-25 school year. Should the request be granted, parents and guardians will be required to provide transportation to and from school. Applications for this exception became available Feb. 11, with the deadline to apply March 1. However, students beginning sixth grade this fall must attend the school they are zoned to under the new plan.
