AISD expected to grow by over 20% in next decade
AISD superintendent lone finalist chosen Rhonda Mason has been named the sole finalist for superintendent of schools for Alvin ISD following a 5-2 vote by the board of trustees at its April 21 special meeting. Trustees Earl Humbird and Cheryl Harris voted against naming Mason as the sole finalist due to concerns about Mason not having enough experience to serve as the superintendent. The details Mason served as assistant superintendent of schools at Fort Bend ISD in 2023 and cur- rently as area superintendent at Lamar CISD. The search process included a review of 42 candidates for the position. The board considered Mason’s superinten- dent contract at its May 13 meeting, which was after press time.
Over the past five years, 3,016 more students enrolled in Alvin ISD, representing an 11.6% increase since 2019. While enrollment continues to grow, the rate of increase has slowed. Under the 10-year projection, AISD’s enrollment is expected to increase by nearly 6,800 students by 2035-36, representing a 22.5% increase. Diving in deeper AISD is currently in a high-growth phase, due to ongoing residential development and continued enrollment increases, according to a presentation from Population and Survey Analysts, or PASA, which was presented at AISD’s April 14 board meeting. “Before [the pandemic], the district was gaining around 1,000 students per year. Starting in 2023, we’ve seen a deceleration of that growth each year,” PASA President Stacey Tepera said at the meeting. “This is not just in Alvin ISD, but this has happened across the state.”
