Seniors face challenge of aging in place
TOP STORY TO WATCH IN 2022 GROWINGWITHAGE According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey, the median age in Georgetown is the highest in Williamson County and at or near the top in Texas, giving the city a unique set of challenges as it continues to grow.

BY TRENT THOMPSON
The median age within Georgetown continues to climb, increasing from 40.9 to 46.3, according to U.S. Census Bureau data from 2010-19. Seniors are now 29.1% of George- town’s population, more than dou- ble that of other cities throughout Williamson County, according to 2020 U.S. Census Bureau data. The Austin-Round Rock metro had the fastest-growing population of adults 55-64 years old and is the second fast- est-growing metro for seniors 65 and up, according to U.S. census data. As the senior population rises, senior care services, the city of Georgetown and senior caregivers are nding solutions to address emerg- ing challenges seniors face, such as housing aordability, more diverse housing options, a shortage of fam- ily and professional caregivers, and social isolation, said Andrew Levack, senior program ocer for St. David’s Foundation.

ABOUT US
Owners John and Jennifer Garrett launched the rst edition of Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 with three full-time employees covering Round Rock and Pugerville, Texas. We have expanded our operations to include hundreds of employees, our own printing operation and over 30 hyperlocal editions across three states. Our circulation is over 2 million residential mailboxes, and it grows each month with new residents and developments.
HIGHLIGHTS FROMTHISMONTH
FROMDENISE: Each January we publish our Annual Community Guide. We love to share with our readers the new restaurants and shops that have opened in 2021 or that plan to open in 2022. If you like to support local businesses in the area, check out these guides (see Pages 12-15). I want to wish you all a prosperous and Happy New Year! Denise Seiler, GENERALMANAGER

FROMEDDIE: I don’t know about you, but I was chomping at the bit to get 2021 o the books. I get that the “fresh starts” and “new beginnings” associated with the turn of a calendar page are solely a human construct, but I appreciate the clean slate they present nonetheless. So, to you and yours, I am hopeful for great things in the coming months. Eddie Harbour, EDITOR
Our purpose is to be a light for our readers, customers, partners and each other.

Leander City Council approved a $13.9 million purchase of right of way to help facilitate the expansion of RM 2243 during its Nov. 4 meeting. The project will also receive funding fromWilliamson County as the council approved an interlocal agreement between the two. The project would extend approximately 8 miles from 183A Toll to Southwest Bypass, near I-35, according to city of Leander documents. Of those 8 miles, approximately 3 miles fall within the city of Leander. “This part is the buying the right of ways, or easements, for the rst frontage road that will be built as part of the expansion. Our part will be the $13.9 million to buy the right of way for the 3 miles that’s within the city limits,” said Dan Grimsbo, the city’s executive director of infra- structure, during the Nov. 4 meeting. Once completed, the road would have two lanes in each direction as well as three frontage road lanes in each

direction, according to the Williamson County website. The project’s rst phase would add a single frontage road that serves two-way trac. The project also would include straightening roadway curves and accommodations for pedestrians and cyclists. According to city documents, construction on the project will begin in early 2022, pending approval from the Texas Department of Transportation. The county will also meet with impacted property owners to discuss project details.

Each vehicle is also equipped with sand for short-term traction. CAUSES OF DEATHS On Dec. 28, The Texas Department of Health and Human Services placed the nal death count as a result of Winter Storm Uri at 246, up from 210, six of which were in Williamson County.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY Emergency response ocials said the county is better prepared for any potential icy weather this year following Winter Storm Uri, which left millions across the state without power, water and heat. During a Dec. 15 press conference, representatives from the county’s road and bridge, emergency management and EMS departments discussed what they have done to improve their response to winter weather and asked residents to prepare their homes nowwhile conditions are still good. “The lessons learned—and we spent about six months going through an after-action review—fromWinter Storm Uri, I absolutely feel better prepared,” EMS Operations Division Commander Ed Tydings said. Emergency Management Director Michael Shoe said the county learned the importance of coordination and being more proactive in the wake of Uri. To this end, he said the county is already communicating with utility providers and identifying dialysis centers and fueling stations that will be open during bad weather. Ubiquity given approval to build open-access, ber-optic network throughout Georgetown
Fiber-optic networks have a longer shelf life than traditional cable net- works, Dial said. This new network also has the potential to serve the city for up to 40 years, he said. “Georgetown has a single cable provider, and there isn’t a ton of ber in the city,” Dial said. “Our view is that we put this infrastructure in the ground and we open it up to anyone else who wants to sit on top of it. That can be in your standard internet service provider brands, and it could be things ve or 10 years down the road that we don’t know about today.”
