Leander ISD instituting several changes in 2020 In 2020, Leander ISD will continue to face the challenge of accommo- dating increased enrollment while remaining one of the highest-scoring districts in the state, school ocials have said. BRIAN PERDUE proposing a school bond to fund capital projects to keep up with enrollment. The last school bond, which totaled • Law, Safety, Corrections and Securities: instructs students in law, public safety, corrections and security; • Audio Visual Production: class would oer comprehensive instruction in audio and video communications and the industries around them; • Graphic Design and Illustration: Leander ISD trustees are pictured during a 2019meeting from left: Vice President Aaron Johnson, Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, JimMackay, President Trish Bode, PamWaggoner, Secretary Grace Barber-Jordan and Elexis Grimes. (Photos by Brian Perdue/Community Impact Newspaper)

$454.4 million, passed with two- thirds of the vote in 2017. However, trustees have said that bond was described before the vote as a three- year bond. Trustees said there may be other, short-term alternatives to a bond, such as school rezoning or the creation of magnet-type schools on campuses that are under capacity. New classes In August, LISD will oer eight new classes: • Physics I: a course that is equivalent to a rst-semester introductory college course in physics; • Chamber Ensemble: this alternative to Jazz Ensemble would be an elective course; • Cybersecurity: instructs the funda- mentals, ethics and laws;

The upcoming year oers a host of new proposals that LISD will be considering. All-day prekindergarten LISD is seeking community feedback on how best to expand its prekindergarten program from a half day to a full day, according to ocials. House Bill 3, passed by the Texas Legislature and signed into law June 11, requires that all pre-K oered to 4-year-old students be for the entire day, not just a half day. To help meet the requirements, HB 3 increased funding and created an “early education allotment,” according to the Texas Education Agency. Eligibility to attend full-day pre-K at no cost is based on several, mostly economic, factors. The district has set up an online survey to gauge interest from LISD families, residents and stakeholders at www.leanderisd.org/preksurvey. Another bond? With LISD expected to gain more than 1,000 students annually through the 2029-30 school year, an annual demographic report recom- mends that LISD begin considering

oers introductory instruction in careers in graphic design and illustration, which are incorporated throughout the advertising and visual communications industry; • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): students will apply previously studied knowledge and skills; and • Architecture: provides general instruction in various elds of architecture, construction and interior design. The location of each class will be based on demand, according to LISD ocials.

A Leander ISD ocial addresses the LISD board of trustees at the Nov. 19 meeting.
