HIGHLIGHTS ROUND ROCK Round Rock High School Senior Krupali Kumar is one of two students who will represent Texas in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. Kumar will join Texas Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz for the virtual conference, as well as receive a $10,000 college scholarship. ROUND ROCK The Texas Dance Educators Association in January named Maria Valk, Round Rock ISD dance educator and fine arts coordinator, the lifetime achievement award recipient for 2021. Information from the district states the TDEA recognized Valk for her contributions to dance education over her 25-year career.
Local STAARparticipation dropped from2019 to 2021 ROUND ROCK ISD The Texas Academic Performance Report, an update released in December by the Texas Education Association, shows the Round Rock ISD participation rate for state exams fell sharply in 2021. The breakdown of those who did not test shows 13% were absent, while 17% of students fall into a category described as “other.” Data from 2019 is used because the STAAR exam was not given in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “As we remember, in the spring last year TEA essentially said that we need to encourage students to come and get their STAAR [end of course] exam, but it wasn’t required,” said Ryan Smith, chief of teaching and learning, at a Jan. 20 meeting.
