AISD OKs substitute pay increase
Also of note
District staff said the new pay rates will go into effect next semester. “It’s very important to be able to fill all of our requests for subs,” Chief Financial Officer Liz Stewart said. “You don’t want a classroom going uncovered.” In addition, the board approved hiring five special education aide positions to prepare for increased enrollment. The district hired five additional contingency aides at the start of the school year and has already filled all of those positions. The additional positions will help the district to proactively prepare for potential increases in special education teaching units, per district documents. This will cost the district $162,000 and will come from the maintenance and operations budget, according to district documents.
The Argyle ISD board approved a $10 per day pay increase for substitute teachers and paraprofessionals at a Dec. 15 meeting. AISD has experienced challenges in maintaining an adequate pool of substitute teachers and paraprofessionals to meet daily campus needs, per district documents. The new pay rates are: • $100 per day for non-degreed substitute teachers • $105 per day for substitute teachers with degrees • $110 per day for Texas-certified teachers • $135 per day for long-term substitutes • $135 per day for a registered nurse • $95 per day for paraprofessionals This will cost the district $70,000 and the funds will come from the maintenance and operations budget, per district documents.

individual therapy sessions and a family therapy session each week. Patients complete two-and-a- half hours of school a day as well as three hours of group therapy. What makes it unique Although Hermes and her family intended to open a treatment center for young boys, they realized there was a greater need in the community among young girls. “At the time we opened, we were the rst residen- tial female-only facility in Texas,” Hermes said. Roots Renewal Ranch utilizes a mixture of cogni- tive behavioral therapy, music therapy, art therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, somatic psychotherapy, and animal therapy. “The animals are the purpose for the clients,” Hermes said. “It gives them something outside themselves to care for.” Hermes said the goal is to give patients natural dopamine boosts that they’re not getting from technology and substances. After their brother Nathan struggled with sub- stance use for over 20 years, Rebecca Hermes and her sister founded Roots Renewal Ranch in Argyle in 2021 to help families with similar challenges. Hermes said Nathan had been to many dierent kinds of treatment centers and had a conversation with his family shortly before he passed away about what worked and what didn’t work. “That conversation is the backbone to what Roots [Renewal Ranch] is,” Hermes said. “We just wanted to be able to help families so that they didn’t have to experience what we experienced.” Located at 819 Indian Trail, Argyle, Roots Renewal Ranch is a residential treatment center for girls ages 13 to 17 who are experiencing mental health chal- lenges, including substance use, anxiety, depression

The clinicians use a trauma-informed approach to address not just the behavior, but the root cause underneath. Hermes said her brother often received a “sobriety band-aid” that didn’t lead to long-term change. “He would come back and be triggered by family or life and it would be a matter of time before he would use again,” Hermes said. “Getting down into the trauma and dealing with what’s underneath the behavior–whether that’s self harm, suicidal ide- ation, substance use, etc.–then you can heal.” The 60- to 90-day program includes two

“This is a hidden gem, and it’s not like they’re going to build another River Walk in the town of Flower Mound,” Kummer said. “Rather than just come down here for the arts, they can come down here and grab dinner [and] go to the show afterwards.” With the arts center project, town officials said they hope it will ultimately make the River Walk a local and regional destination. Officials added that they recognize the generally negative opinions about the development, stemming from it not living up to the original vision for the River Walk. “There is a recognition that we have to do our part to finish it out,” Childers said. “Flower Mound doesn’t benefit if everybody just stands and points and criticizes the River Walk. There has to be some energy and investment to finish it out.” Additionally, Childers said the town is looking to find ways to program nearby undeveloped land in a complementary way to the arts center, such as putting up a screen for outdoor movies or setting up a performance stage.
Flower Mound officials are moving forward with plans to construct an arts center within the River Walk mixed-use development after hosting an opportunity for public feedback Dec. 11. Town Manager James Childers said this project is an opportunity to develop a catalyst and an amenity within the River Walk, which could draw more foot traffic to the mixed-use development. The 3.67-acre site that will house the future arts center was previously envisioned as an amphitheater adjacent to the River Walk’s restaurants, according to the development documents. “The general idea is to be able to put something that has people on a regular basis,” Childers said. “From there, the people go to the restaurants, they go to the shops.” Chris Kummer—a co-owner for the building housing Vinifera Wine Lounge & Bistro, which recently opened in the River Walk—added that the arts center project could help generate foot traffic for the area and complement the existing businesses.

previous councils have done to say we bless this concept,” Childers said. Because the project is in the early stages, town officials have not created any formal initiatives used to increase the number of hotel nights. Childers said internal conversations are happening about ways the town could leverage those funds in conjunction with arts center programming.
Town officials project to spend around $50 million on the arts center, but the final price tag will be finalized during the design process. Other town investments within the River Walk area include the construction of a parking garage near the development’s restaurants. “This represents that first sizable investment besides just the oversight and approval that

Additionally, town officials extended Tax Incre- ment Reinvestment Zone No. 1, which includes the River Walk, for five years last December. A tax increment reinvestment zone is a public financing tool that allows municipalities to capture up to 100% of the growth in property tax values above the base set when the zone is established. The zone was originally created in September 2005, and funds within the zone are earmarked to pay for improvement projects, such as the arts center. “We have this unique financing tool that puts us in a position to do that without having to raise the tax rate or touch the tax rate for our residents to be able to deliver this facility,” he said. Along with town funding, Denton County has agreed to fund the project through participation in the tax increment reinvestment zone. “We anticipate the performing arts center bene- fiting communities across our county and region,” Denton County Judge Andy Eads said. “We need more public venues to continue building on our
The tentative opening date for the arts center is in spring 2029. While the town works its way through the design process, Childers said public input will be important. “We want people to be engaged in the process, share their thoughts, and take advantage of these opportunities to be able to engage and provide feedback,” Childers said. Doris Aguirre, a resident who attended the Dec. 11 feedback session, said she hopes the proposed arts center incorporates more green space and feels inviting, which could help connect the development. “I really hope that this new arts center enhances the River Walk and brings people into the River Walk because the River Walk is actually very beautiful,” Aguirre said. “If they work together to kind of connect one to the other, I think they can bring people into those restaurants.”

Radivojevich recreated that cake. “I like to please the customers and I like to be open to bake whatever [they] request,” she said. “But I have to control myself and follow the line that I have a business, [which] is dierent from baking from home.” Looking ahead Radivojevich has no desire to expand her business, instead wanting to establish The Sweet Shop as a popular bakery and have the community recognize the purple boxes her cookies come in. “I like to make stops and enjoy what I have,” she said. “We have two little girls and I want to be able to spend time with them and not miss anything from their school.”

She taught herself how to bake desserts, and then her customers pushed her into baking custom cakes. “My rst idea was to bake desserts like cheese- cake, pies [and] very simple desserts,” she said. “My customers started asking me for custom-made cakes and I said I don’t know how to do [them].” She has since learned how to bake and decorate cakes, which she sells in her shop.
