DROWNING PREVENTION & SWIMMING SAFETY

SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of injury and death for children ages 1-4. The CDC recommends people of all ages and swimming abilities wear a life jacket while boating, and all children and weaker swimmers wear one while in natural waterways.

IF THEY HAVE THEIR SELFRESCUE SKILLS, THAT MEANS THEY CAN TURN THEMSELVES UP AND HORIZONTAL, AND THEY HAVE A FIGHTING CHANCE TO FIND THEIR FLOAT, REST AND BREATHE UNTIL HELP ARRIVES. SHERRY SPAAR, OWNER OF ISWIM4LIFE AQUATICS SCHOOL, ON TEACHING INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN DROWNING PREVENTION SKILLS

As the summer months kick o, it is important to keep these safety tips in mind. • Any depth of water can be dangerous. • Always place a barrier around water. • Drowning is often quiet and quick. • Swim in supervised areas. • Keep an eye on the weather and go inside if bad weather is approaching. • Always enter water feet rst and do not dive into shallow water.
