Judge blocks TEA from issuing A F school ratings A Travis County judge blocked the Texas Educa- tion Agency from releasing its AŽF accountability ratings for Texas school districts and campuses Aug. 12. The agency was set to release ratings for the 2023-24 school year on Aug. 15. A full hearing is scheduled for Sept. 16 after press time. A program at Tomball ISD will help sta become teachers. The overview Grow Your Own program is a partnership with the University of Houston-Downtown and Texas Woman’s University, per a July 18 news release. To be eligible for the program, individuals must: • Be a TISD sta member • Have an associate degree or 60 college credit hours • Work full-time as a paraprofessional in classrooms The program o ers sta the opportunity to earn a Texas teaching license and a bachelor’s degree. In a lawsuit –led Aug. 12, –ve public school dis- tricts said the TEA has not been transparent about changes to its accountability system and failed to –x “mistakes” made last year. The suit alleges that TEA Commissioner Mike Morath did not provide enough information about the changes or commu- nicate them in a timely manner. Texas’ AŽF system gives parents insight about their children’s schools, with ratings based on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness performance, academic growth and more. The ratings are based on student performance on

the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readi- ness, academic growth and high school graduation rates, among other factors. The STAAR makes up the majority of a school’s rating. This year, Texas began using a new auto- mated computer system to grade the STAAR, which the –ve districts said was “not valid and reliable.”
