Tangra’s Daughter New York brand introduces Indo-Chinese cuisine to Missouri City J oycelyn Lo and Kai Huang brought their family’s Indo-Chinese cuisine concept all the way from New York City to Missouri City. The concept began with Lo’s father, Peter, who opened Tangra Masala in Elmhurst, New York, in the early 2000s. After having success with that location, the Lo family opened a banquet hall called BY RENEE FARMER

opened Tangra’s Daughter in October. The restaurant’s name refers to Lo. Tangra is the Chinatown in Kolkata, India, the birthplace of both Lo’s father and Indo-Chinese cuisine. Huang said the eatery’s cuisine is Asian fusion— Chinese food infused with Indian seasonings. “That’s what we thought we’d bring new to the table here because we didn’t see a lot of Asian fusion like that, specically Indo-Chinese,” Huang said. The most popular items include fried chicken drumsticks, called Chicken Lollypops, and the chicken or vegetable momos, which are steamed or fried dumplings. The eatery serves vegetarian dishes and also caters to the Muslim community by using halal meat. The couple said they have had more success than they expected for a new restaurant, and many cus- tomers were familiar with the New York locations. Huang said the couple hopes to continue helping other cultures experience Indo-Chinese cuisine. “If we could branch out, kind of just to share our cuisine out, that would be our ultimate goal,” Huang said. Since Lo had experience in her father’s restaurant, the couple decided to start a restaurant. After struggling to nd an aordable space in New York City, they began to consider moving in October 2021. A friend who relocated to Sugar Land recommended they visit the Houston area. “Things are cheaper here,” Huang said. “It’s very diverse; people love to eat here.” After multiple ights down over a six-month search, a space in Missouri City opened up.
