Austin to halt license plate reader program The Austin Police Department’s use of dozens of automated license plate read- ers, or ALPRs, will end in June following community pushback. What happened City Council was scheduled to vote June 5 to indenitely continue an ALPR pilot pro- gram. However, City Manager T.C. Broadnax moved to withdraw the item after council’s recent review of the city’s program audit and a June 3 discussion that drew dozens of people against the item to City Hall. APD leaders, including Chief Lisa Davis, said ALPRs have proven to be a key crime-ghting tool and that ocers are prop- erly using the system. Opponents on council dais and in the community have said the cameras represent surveillance overreach. West Lake Hills’ new city hall nears completion As construction crews approach a substantial completion deadline of the new West Lake Hills Municipal Complex on July 14, city ocials are sharing updates regarding progress made on the new building. The overview At a City Council meeting May 28, project manager Stephen Karp highlighted recent progress made at the complex, located at 4010 Bee Caves Road. Interior work at the complex has continued throughout May, with large numbers of contrac- tors onsite each day, Karp said. “We’re getting down here to the end,” Karp said. Some context Construction began on the new municipal com- plex in May 2024 as a result of the voter-approved Proposition A, which authorized $13.2 million for the new building. Later, City Council authorized an additional $9.5 million for land acquisition and cost escalations. The new complex was needed due to West Lake Hills’ current city hall, constructed in 1983, no lon- ger being up to current building code and showing
Bee Cave to help fund sculpture updates The Bee Cave sculpture park will soon undergo sculpture updates and revital- ization eorts following the passage of a resolution by Bee Cave City Council on May 13. The park is owned by the Bee Cave Arts Foundation, a nonprot formed in 2009 with the goal of providing education and integration of art into public spaces, accord- ing to city documents. The foundation previously applied for funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts for $6,000, which the city agreed to match in an eort to support the park from the city’s hotel occupancy tax fund. The details Funding will help the foundation add ve new sculptures, name plates, a new map and brochures to the park, said Deby Childress, Bee Cave Arts Foundation director, at the meeting. Other parts of funding will be dedicated to events, awards and other celebrations to attract artists.
Work on the West Lake Hills Municipal Complex will wrap up in July, ocials said.

EISD Superintendent Je Arnett announces retirement Eanes ISD ocials announced in a news release June 16 that current Superintendent Je Arnett will retire next month. The details Per the release, Arnett’s retirement will be eective July 31. “Although the board graciously extended my contract, I believe this is the right time for fresh ideas and new energy to lead the district forward.”
Leander ISD considers combining certain elementary schools Leander ISD is considering ways to opti- mize elementary facilities below 60% capacity following recommendations shared by district ocials May 29. The big picture Path 1: This would net $4.1 million in savings by consolidating Faubion Elementary to Westside Elementary, Cypress Elementary to Naumann Elementary, and Steiner Ranch Elementary to Laura W. Bush Elementary and River Ridge Elementary. Path 2: This would net $1.7 million in sav- ings by updating the model for the number of non-teacher sta at low-enrolled elementary campuses. Path 3: This would net $3.5 million in savings and implement actions from Paths 1 and 2. The board is slated to receive further updates in June, August, September, January and February.
Null approved as LTISD superintendent The board of trustees formally approved Curtis Null as the new superintendent of Lake Travis ISD at a May 22 special meeting. Diving in deeper Null has served as the superintendent of Conroe ISD since 2018, and brings 23 years of experience to the table from his time as a deputy and assistant superintendent, principal and assistant principal, teacher, and athletic trainer. “I look forward to the chance to get to meet everyone,” Null said. “... I know that we’ll have opportunities to visit along the way, and I really look forward to those opportunities—and I just cherish this moment.” Null began his tenure at LTISD on June 2. Arnett began serving as deputy superintendent in EISD in 2016 before becoming superintendent in January 2022. Throughout his tenure, Arnett served on the Envision Eanes committee and Long-Range Facility Planning Committee, and led the District Leadership Team. The 2023 bond was also passed in Arnett’s time as superintendent, including three propositions total- ing $131.4 million for district-wide improvements, according to EISD’s website. Prior to his role in Eanes, he served as a teacher and in communications and community relation roles in schools across the Midwest, as well as a role at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, where he will be returning. What they’re saying “Leaving Eanes ISD after nine wonderful years is an emotional decision,” Arnett said in the release.
JEFF ARNETT, EISD SUPERINTENDENT
EISD board considers districtwide renovations Eanes ISD ocials are considering districtwide reconstruction and modernization projects to bring its elementary, middle and high school campuses up to standard. EISD’s Long-Range Facility Planning Committee co-Chairs Holly Noel and Craig Boyle presented the committee’s recommendations to the board of trustees during the May 20 board meeting. The recommendations could later go to the district’s bond advisory committee, who would package one or more bonds to complete the projects. The current recommended timeline outlines at least a seven-year process to complete the projects The details The committee is recommending EISD move to a four-elementary model and repurpose Eanes Elementary as a central hub for the district’s “It has been the greatest honor of my career to serve this exceptional community.” Looking ahead The board of trustees will hold a special meeting June 17, after press time, to begin the process of identifying the next superintendent. “Dr. Arnett’s service has been marked by integrity, vision and collaboration,” board president Kim McMath said in the news release. “His thoughtful leadership has positioned the district for continued success while navigating both challenges and opportunities. The new procedure will serve as a tool to help special- ists detect growths in the colon without patients feeling any physical change in their colonoscopy experience, according to a news release. The overview During a colonoscopy, a thin, exible camera is inserted into the colon, or large intestine, in order to scan and detect growths or polyps. At Austin Gastroenterology, this procedure will now include additional equipment which will use AI to scan image databases to more accurately compare and detect polyps, said Dr. Sanjana Luther, a board-certied gastroenterologist practicing at Austin Gastroenterology. “It’s kind of like an added layer, an extra set of
eyes, to essentially help us detect polyps—spe- cically those that might be a little bit harder to detect,” Luther said. The details The technology, referred to as the Medtronic GI Genius module, was introduced at the practice in early April, and is available at all four of the busi- ness’ Austin Endoscopy Center locations in North Austin, South Austin, Bee Cave and Leander. A key indicator of colonoscopy quality is adenoma detection rate, or ADR, according to the practice’s news release, which is the rate of detection of colon polyps in patients. The practice is aiming to improve these numbers with the new GI Genius module, and saw positive improvements in a trial period prior to purchasing the technology, Luther said.

4 health care updates from hospitals in the surrounding area
1 Ascension Seton Southwest Ascension Seton Southwest celebrated its 25th anniversary in May. Alongside growth in the Southwest Austin area, hospital system officials said its services continue to expand as well. What’s new In November, Ascension Seton Southwest opened its fourth operating room. According to Patrick Paver, hospital administrator for Ascension Seton Southwest, the hospital performs over roughly 750 orthopedic surgeries and 300 general surgeries yearly. The new operating room features new lights and high-definition technology for endoscopy towers, which allows surgeons to more closely examine the inside of the body. Ascension Seton Southwest’s outpatient care services have also grown significantly, which includes pediatric rehabilitation in collaboration with Dell Children’s Emergency Care and cardiac rehabilitation. Paver said those programs have grown 15-20% every year since they opened. Paver said the hospital is also on track to open an intermediate care unit, or IMU, at the end of this year. Paver said the IMU will allow more patients to recover closer to home. Ascension Seton’s Central Austin campus at 1201 W. 38th St., Austin, is on track to open its new women’s tower early next year, according to a hospital representative.
3 Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Lakeway The hospital recently earned an Advanced Spine Surgery Certification from Det Norske Veritas group. “With Lakeway’s aging population, and more people working remotely, spine issues like stenosis and osteoarthritis are increasingly common,” a hospital representative said in a news release.

Austin-area residents can now receive specialized care for stroke emergencies and treatment at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Austin. The overview The medical center is now a designated primary stroke center, or PSC, following a national certification by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. As a PSC, the medical center offers specialized treatment for stroke patients including: • Board-certified telehealth neurologists The services at the medical center allow patients to receive comprehensive care in one central place, rather than having to travel to another hospital for stroke treatment. Dr. Farzan Ghodsianzadeh, neurologist and medical director of stroke care at BS&W Medical Center-Austin, said the center sees a “significant number” of patients in the area. He said the team is also seeing more patients under 50 impacted by stroke, making the PSC especially important. “Having a certified stroke center right here in Austin brings expert care closer to where our younger population lives, which means faster treatment and better outcomes,” he said. • Emergency physicians • Stroke-trained nurses

Vaccine exemptions up from 2023-24
Diving in deeper
In EISD, 62 of 8,139 students had reason of con- science exemptions in 2019-20, or less than 1% of the student body. That grew to 285 of 7,595 students with exemptions, or nearly 4%, in 2024-25. Medical exemptions increased from 6 to 53 in that time. Ennis said she has also seen an increase in LTISD reason of conscience exemptions after the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, 255 out of 11,805 students had either exemption in 2019-20, or 2.16% of students. That grew to 700 out of 11,010 students with exemptions in 2024-25, or 6.4%. LISD also follows the state’s “exclusion day” pro- tocol where once monthly students without proper immunization or exemption records are excluded from school until they reach compliance, said Cristin Wicketts, LISD’s director of health services.
Between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years, medical or reason of conscience vaccine exemptions increased from 2.9% to 4.5% in Eanes ISD, 4.9% to 6.4% in Lake Travis ISD and 12.5% to 15.3% in Leander ISD, district data shows. Districts are required to follow the Texas Department of State Health Services set list of required vaccinations for all public schools, but state law allows students to receive vaccine exemptions through for medical reasons, reasons of conscience due to religious or personal beliefs, or those in the military. The law does not allow exemptions out of “inconvenience,” such as lost or incomplete medical records, according to the DSHS. Reason of conscience exemptions must be notarized and are valid for two years, while medical exemptions must include a statement from the student’s physician and can be valid for life, LTISD lead nurse Jamie Ennis said. “With the reasons of conscious exemptions, I think there’s been kind of a fear of vaccines since the COVID vaccine, and it’s basically leading to students not getting immunized that have a solid history of being safe,” Ennis said. Medical exemptions tend to not be common at her school but do pop up, EISD Bridgepoint Elementary nurse Leslie Boldrick said. “I’ve had a student that has had an allergic reaction to the first [measles vaccine dose],” Boldrick said. “... I’ve had students that came in from other countries and they needed to start the series, but [their physician] didn’t want to do all of them at the same time.”

Local EMS officials share tips for residents in medical emergencies
The overview
For Spicewood residents, ESD #9 offers free first- aid classes on a monthly basis, training the public on how to administer basic first aid practices like CPR or stroke assessments, which Hamilton said can improve some conditions. Hamilton also emphasized the importance of calling 911 as opposed to driving a patient to the hospital independently. “If you’re having a true heart attack, sometimes people end up [trying] to take themselves to the hospital, [and] they go to the wrong hospital,” Hamilton said. “There’s certain hospitals that can treat heart attacks and certain ones that can’t.” Hamilton said that locating a hospital is a critical choice emergency responders should make.
callers in medical emergencies can do is to gather and share as much medical information about the involved patient as possible. Hamilton recommended keeping a short page of medical conditions, contacts, insurance information, allergies and current medications, and said that the benefit to first responders is significant. “There was a woman in Marble Falls who did that and she just placed it on the wall,” Hamilton said. “As soon as we walk in her front door, we see this envelope for EMS and it’s really handy—especially if it’s a time-sensitive medical emergency.”
With 9 different EMS departments serving the Lake Travis-Westlake region, county officials are sharing advice on how residents should respond in a medical emergency. Residents of the Lake Travis region fall between two counties: Travis and Burnet, each with their own array of emergency services districts. In the Spicewood area, residents are serviced by ESD #9 of Burnet County, which includes its own fire department and emergency medical services dispatch. Vaughn Hamilton, who oversees the district’s community paramedic and outreach program, said that one of the most important things

Medical experts clarify care options
Who’s providing the care?
No matter the facility, patients might be seen by either a medical doctor or a nurse practitioner—so what’s the difference? • MD (medical doctor): physicians who complete medical school and residency, can perform surgery, and prescribe medication • NP (nurse practitioner): registered nurses with advanced degrees who can diagnose, treat and prescribe More NP programs are becoming doctoral- level, meaning they involve more advanced education, said Amy Papermaster, a nurse practitioner at Women’s Health. In Texas, NPs must also collaborate with a physician. Papermaster said patients won’t notice much difference between seeing a nurse practitioner and a physician. Nurse practitioners can diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and manage a wide range of conditions.
A sore throat on a Saturday night may leave one wondering, “Should I wait for my doctor, visit urgent care or head to the emergency room?” Amid seasonal illnesses, local experts share tips for choosing the right level of care. “Knowing where to turn during a medical emergency is extremely important for the community, because it [leads] to the best possible outcome and also ensures that they receive the best value for the care provided,” said Laura Hochwalt, vice president of emergency services at St. David’s HealthCare. Hochwalt said doctors are present not only at primary care offices but also at urgent care centers and in emergency room departments.
Knowing where to go
Patients should see a primary care provider for nonurgent health concerns and routine medical care. Primary care office Urgent care is for after-hours care meant for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Urgent care center Emergency rooms are for life-threatening situations, such as traumatic injuries, fractures, burns and stroke-like symptoms. Emergency room
