Stop Overpaying on Property Taxes Mark Martin was chosen by Humble City Council to ll Place 1, which was left vacant following the death of council member Charles “Andy” Curry on Dec. 15. Five people applied to ll Place 1, and they were each interviewed by City Council before Martin was chosen, Mayor Norman Funderburk said during the Feb. 12 regular Humble City Council meeting. City law allows the council to either hold a special election or appoint a replacement when a council member seat is left vacant. The Place 1 term runs until 2027. In December 2022, Martin was chosen to replace outgoing council member Charles Cunningham after he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. Humble restricts faux slot machines Humble City Council unanimously voted Feb. 12 to restrict faux slot machine games, called eight-liners, to specic venues— reducing the number of places allowed to oer the games by half, city ocials said. What’s changing? Under the new ordinance, bars, night clubs, bingo halls and billiard halls can only oer up to two eight-liner games. “In short, we’re taking them out of gas stations, and we’re not allowing stand- alone game rooms, period,” City Manager Jason Stuebe said. While slot machines and other gambling devices oering cash prizes are illegal in Texas, eight-liners are legal if they grant non-cash prizes worth less than $5, accord- ing to the Texas State Law Library.

Houston Fire Department opens revamped Station 92 at IAH to the aviation system, because the aviation system is run on trust,” HAS Director of Aviation Jim Szczesniak said. “The passengers trust that we’re going to make everything as safe as possible so they have a great journey, and that includes the reghters here.” How did we get here?
The Houston Fire Department’s newest station— Station 92—is now serving the George Bush Intercontinental Airport after a grand opening celebration was held for the facility Feb. 6. At a glance The new 21,000-square-foot re station is replacing the old facility, and is one of three re stations at IAH, said Steve Runge, the director of operations for the Houston Airport System, during the Feb. 6 event. The facility will be staed 24/7, 365 days per year, he added.
The original Station 92 still sits near the new facility, Runge said. Station 92 was originally located at 4300 Will Clayton Parkway, Houston, while the new station is located at 4500 Will Clayton Parkway, Houston. The new station was funded through a combina- tion of federal and HAS funding, Runge said. Notable quote “To everybody out there that’s been part of this: this could not have been done without you,” HFD Chief Thomas Muñoz said Feb. 6. “It started o as a vision, it’s now a reality.”
The new 21,000-square-foot re station features six re-response apparatuses.
Station 92 has features such as: • Six re-response apparatuses • Administrative oces • Dorms for reghters to rest • A shared kitchen and dining room

A closer look
Wooden said some of the new events have sprung from local business owners’ and residents’ involvement. Local business owner Darian Ortiz said she con- cocted Kids Day in the Park to draw more people to Downtown Humble after she opened her store, The Rowdy Chick, nearby in January 2025. Ortiz also operates as an event vendor.
local farmers,” Krystal Wertman said. In late 2024, JG Events also took over management of Kingwood Town Center’s annual heritage events, such as Christmas in the Park and the Mardi Gras Festival. In Humble, city ocials have partnered with local businesses to host a new monthly Sip & Shop event and a quarterly Kids Day in the Park event. Humble Civic Center Director Jennifer Wooden, who organizes many of the events, said the city and the volunteers want to “breathe life back into our downtown.” “For us, the growth really is coming from events, and it is what draws tourists to Humble,” Wooden said.
Free community events—from farmers markets to themed festivals—have been emphasized across the Lake Houston area over the last year to stir up economic activity, local stakeholders said. On Jan. 1, the Kingwood Farmers Market relaunched under new management— family-owned company JG Events, which acquired the Lake Houston Farmers Market in early 2025. Krystal Wertman, who owns JG Events with her husband, Timothy Wertman, said they want to expand and refresh the markets. “We want to bring people … here and keep our money local here in Humble and support our

Something to note
Assuming responsibility for established events has presented some challenges along the way, Krystal Wertman said. During JG Events’ rst Fourth of July event in Kingwood, attendees reported diculty viewing the reworks. Krystal Wertman said she has been working to ensure the next event goes smoothly. Nicole Jaimes, the marketing/operations direc- tor for Chachi’s Mexican Restaurant in Kingwood Town Center, said some of new management’s changes for the events have been frustrating. For example, Jaimes said she takes issue with JG Events charging vendors 20% of alcohol sales, plus an event fee. Event goers have also taken up local businesses’ parking lots, she said. Vendor charges help JG Events cover the cost of event insurance, permits, stang and more, the Wertmans said in a Feb. 6 email statement. They said they are working on improving event parking.

Quotes of note
Fun for the family
The Wertmans said they are brimming with new event ideas they hope to debut soon in the local area. Plans include a spicy food festival in Kingwood, with the date to be determined. “The community itself really appreciates the family-friendly events that we put on so they can come out and do something that’s a©ordable,” Timothy Wertman said. Zac Stayton—owner of honey shop Sweet Wing Gardens, a new vendor at the Kingwood Farmers Market—said he feels JG Events has done a good job of creating new interest in the markets and events. Meanwhile, the organizers of the Humble city events are largely focused on continually improving their new events, including a new Flower Fest that will debut in April, Ortiz said. “The events have been the spark for growth in our downtown along with so many improvements that the city has really invested in,” Wooden said.
