With this growth, vacant downtown plots are lling in with development including fast food and retails shops, and in 2023 two new centers at Cibolo Valley Drive and Borgfeld Road were opened.

Work on 3 Cibolo roads set to begin in January Cibolo City Council on Dec. 12 authorized the city manager to enter into a contract with D&D Con- struction for the reconstruction of three roads. The roads included are Dean Road from Old Wie- derstein Road to Green Valley Road; Bolton Road from Haeckerville Road to Stolte Road; and Lower Seguin Road from the low water crossing near the creek to Pfannenstiel Lane. The details The project includes sections that fall under the responsibility of the city and Guadalupe County. On Dec. 12, city staff presented a proposal to commissioner’s court for the county to contribute to the project. Three out of four commissioners said they would consider supporting the proposal. Precinct 2 Commissioner Drew Engelke raised concerns about the possibility of delaying other county projects to support the Cibolo proposal.

Engineering, design of streets approved Universal City City Council on Dec. 19 approved an agreement with HDR Engineer- ing for street engineering and design. The streets will be designed in their existing configuration with improvements to curbs, gutters, sidewalks and some driveway reconstruction, according to the agreement. The streets are Churchwood, Crosswood Drive, Gamblewood, Inkswood, Logswood, Medicine Rock, Old Converse Road, Persia and Travis drives and West Wright Boulevard.

Cibolo’s total contribution will be $5.18 million while the county—if officials agree—will be account- able for $1.15 million. The city portion will be funded through certificates of obligation. What’s next? Commissioners will consider an interlocal agreement with the city for the projects at the end of January but no date had been set by press time. Construction on the roads is scheduled to begin in January, City Manager Wayne Reed said.

Italian, pizzerias trend in NE Metrocom for 2023 Throughout 2023, cities around the Northeast San Antonio Metrocom have seen Italian restau- rants and pizzerias gaining popularity. Staying local While many chain pizzerias opened during the year, a new locally owned Italian restaurant of pizzeria opened during seven out of the 12 months in 2023. Noli’s Vite Italian Restaurant and Capo’s Pizza are expansions to the area, while the owners of Bella Sera Italian Restaurant, Grampie’s Pizzeria and Axe- shack celebrated the opening of their first locations.

Noli’s Vite Italian Restaurant The Italian restaurant opened a new location in Cibolo in Dec. 2022. The restaurant first opened in New Braunfels in 2019 with the goal of serving authentic Italian recipes with fresh ingredients. With development on Cibolo Valley Drive underway, city sta is planning for future develop- ment in other regions of the city, including along FM 1103, FM 78 and to the south along I-10. To plan for these growth areas, city sta and committees have worked on the development of the Comprehensive Master Plan and the I-10 Corridor Plan. “The Comprehensive Master Plan will serve as a guide for the city that outlines where we want people to live, where they can shop, where we need more roads and what the identity of the city will be in 20 years,” Lee said. Mayor Mark Allen said while the city does not have a hand in what businesses come to the developments, the growth means more revenue that can be used on projects such as roads. “In order to do the nice things for the roads, we have to have the sales tax from these commercial properties,” Allen said.

In early 2024, city leaders will approve the Comprehensive Master and the I-10 Corridor plans. To keep residents involved, a website was launched to gather feedback. “We want residents to get involved in city planning and give us feedback on what they want to see ... ,” Lee said. In Cibolo, developing retail centers include Bualo Heights and the Cibolo Valley Retail Buildings, both constructed in 2023, as well as Cibolo Crossing, Cibolo Commons, Cibolo Valley Square and Steele Plaza. Some residents have expressed concern that increased development will negatively aect the city’s small-town feel. “I know Cibolo will keep growing,” resident Heather Steinbach said. “I just want them to keep the residents in mind when planning these projects.” Planning and Economic Development Director Kelsee Jordan Lee said Old Town contributes to Cibolo’s small town identity by providing a pedestrian-driven area for events, shopping locally-owned businesses and other activities. “We do have a lot of residents that are sensitive and aware of the historic roots,” Lee said. “That is one of [City] Council’s main goals.”

SCUCISD names Meloni superintendent finalist Trustees, in a 5-2 vote on Dec. 12, named Paige Meloni the lone finalist for the Schertz-Cibolo- Universal City ISD superintendent position. The details Trustees Amy Thomas and Margaret Carlin voted against the motion. “Despite my difference of opinion, I will stand behind the will of the board, and Ms. Meloni has my 100% support,” Thomas said. “I look forward to what she will bring to the district.” According to a news release, Meloni formerly served the district in administrative roles from 2011 to 2019 including: • Principal of Wiederstein Elementary School • Executive director of student and academic services • Executive director of special programs, grants,

New parkland in Cibolo to be called Schaezler Park On Nov. 14, Cibolo City Council autho- rized the city manager to enter a sales agreement with Marguerite Anne Bonnes to purchase parkland for an amount not to exceed $854,460. The parkland is 18 acres located at the cor- ner of Dean Road and Old Wiederstein Road. During the Dec. 12 meeting, city council approved an amendment to the agreement allowing the property owner to name the future park. The chosen name for the park will be Schaezler Park. The city will also fund the installation of a historical marker for the park. As of press time, the sale was expected to close in December, according to city staff.

Tiffany Gibson takes majority in Schertz City Council Place 4 runoff election
