First Light Book Shop serves coee in old post oce First Light is a passion project founded by Taylor and Robin Bruce, along with partner Breezy Mayo. They saw a need for a community gathering space and created one that allows neighbors and friends to slow down together, Mayo said. How it started First Light’s community programming oers weekly events like children’s book readings and trivia nights, fostering an integral part of the store’s ethos.

Over a year since opening, the response has superseded expectations. Customers line up at the coee window an hour before opening and enjoy perks like free daily drip coee through the membership program. First Light has become a place where regulars form lasting friendships with the sta. “We all care about each other, and that’s reected in how we take care of this community,” Mayo said.

Before First Light opened in August 2023, the space was a U.S. Post Oce. Mayo worked with the Bruces for a year to bring their vision to life, transforming the empty space. Now, stained glass windows reect color onto bookshelves, with room for cozy reading nooks and a kids’ corner. A coee bar with seating greets customers, leading to a courtyard with communal tables.
