Broadnax selected as Austin city manager on $470K salary

T.C. Broadnax will begin serving as Austin’s next permanent city manager, eective May 6. A closer look City Council appointed Broadnax on April 4 with a salary of $470,017.60, plus other allowances and benets. He will take over for interim City Manager Jesús Garza, who’s been in the position since February 2023. Broadnax arrives in Austin after seven years leading Dallas City Hall. He previously served in city management positions in Pompano Beach, Florida; San Antonio; and Tacoma, Washington. The approach Once in Austin, Broadnax laid out several initial priorities to tackle such as: • Hire a permanent police chief through a public process • Solidify a labor agreement between the city and

the Austin Police Association • Decide on an appropriate scope for an analysis of the city’s “homeless ecosystem” • Shore up civic emergency preparedness eorts • Plan the scal year 2024-25 budget, and move to two-year forecasting He also said he’d focus on maintaining a trans- parent and accessible oce, spending time out in the Austin community, closely tracking progress on city initiatives and keeping strong ties with City Council—especially after Dallas leaders reportedly asked him to resign. “I think when you just look around at all the great things that have happened here, all the challenges that still exist, I think Austin is very much where Dallas may have been in 2017 as it relates to what type of manager they are looking for to lead them over the next many, many years. I think I’m that person,” Broadnax said.
