The Conroe ISD board of trustees approved adopting the Bluebonnet Learning curriculum at the Feb. 18 meeting, earlier than the original projected May timeline. Five board members voted in favor of the K-5 English Language Arts and Reading curriculum. Marianne Horton and Melissa Semmler abstained as they said they wanted to hear more feedback from teachers before adoption. The gist Prior to the vote, board members had decided at the Jan. 7 meeting they would continue gathering feedback from teachers and would come back for a vote in May. However, several board members said they wanted to adopt it sooner. Bluebonnet Learning material had garnered some criticism and concerns from parents and educators across the state in 2024 since it includes frequent references to Christianity and the Bible in the materials, as previously reported by

How we got here Bluebonnet Learning was approved by the State Board of Education from a proposal from the TEA following the approval of House Bill 1605 in 2023, which includes increased funding for approved instructional materials, according to the TEA. Through HB 1605, the district will have additional annual funding of $1.3 million for the Bluebonnet program, received in late 2024, officials said.
