Johnson is beginning a new camp this year called “Warrior Serve” for fourth to seventh grad- ers. The camp focuses on teaching kids to become leaders in the community. Activities include taking the group o-campus to work with local nonprots and volunteer at the Montgomery County Food Bank; make food bags for Meals on Wheels; and make blankets for the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. “We learn a lot through how we can use perse- verance in our own lives and what that looks like at school or at home,” Johnson said.
Camp Director Jolaine Swanson said the annual camps have been proposed by the teachers at the academy since it began in 2022 with 270 kids. It has grown to 471 students in 2025, she said. “One of our goals is that we really want the kids to come here to be technology-free to be able to learn new skill sets to grow them in many dierent ways in their lives,” Swanson said. What is there to do? With 90 camp sessions, groups are made of 30 kids each with two teachers leading each pro- gram. Kristen Johnson, a teacher at the academy, has been leading a program since the camp began in 2022. Johnson leads LEGO Innovation for third- to fth-graders.
