PISD sees 356% growth in bilingual students About 7,000 Prosper ISD students speak or hear a language other than English at home. The number of students in the district acquir- ing English has increased over 350% during the past five school years, Director of Language Programs Alexis King said during a Nov. 13 board meeting. The district has 3,639 students who are learning English. “With our rapid growth, we have also been experiencing rapid diversification,” she said. The context Emergent bilingual refers to students who are acquiring the English language, King said. The number of students classified as emergent bilin- gual decreases through grade levels as students learn the language, she said. Over 70 languages are represented in PISD, King said. PISD partners with Huckabee for projects Prosper ISD officials authorized a contract with Huckabee Inc. for several of its future construction projects. The board approved the partnership during a Nov. 13 meeting. The approach The district received about 19 proposals after it opened a request for architects across the state, PISD Deputy Superintendent Greg Bradley said. District officials then identified four companies that were qualified. PISD has worked with Huckabee on construction projects for almost 20 years, Bradley said. The district is looking to partner with Huckabee on several projects included in the 2023 bond package as well as other construc- tion needs.

in its dual language two-way program, King said. Students spend 50% of their day learning in Spanish and the other half learning in English, King said. The two-way dual language program ends in fifth grade, but students can continue their Spanish education through courses at Rogers Middle School before going on to their zoned high schools that all offer advanced Spanish classes, she said.
